"Ahh! Stop," Maria exclaimed. "I can't breathe!" She continued to giggle and grasp for air.
"Dougie!"
"Alright, I'll stop," Dougie chuckled out. "Only if...you can answer the special question."
"Oh god, what is it?" Maria waited patiently for the nonsense to come out of Dougie's brain.
"Tell me, who is the bestest?" Dougie smirked at Maria. She knew Dougie expected her to say him, but instead she asked him to repeat the question.
"I said, who is the bestest?" Now Maria had the chance to mess with Dougie, and considering he always messes with her, she took her chance.
"Well, I think the bestest is this boy, my best friend."
"Oh yeah? Tell me about him."
"First off," Maria started "he's extremely cute. He also always listens to me and helps me, but he is kinda a pain in the butt." Maria smirked when she saw the blushing beginning to happen across Dougie's cheeks.
"His name?" Maria asked. "Charles."
"Really? Your stupid gerbil!" Dougie laughed.
"Hes not stupid, just a little confused." Maria exclaimed with happiness spread throughout her facial expression. Again, Dougie began to tickle Maria.
"Dougs! Stop!"
"Okay fine." They both tried to catch their breaths.
They sat in silence, but a kind of silence that was a comfortable one, but only for a few seconds.
"You know, I'll miss you when you leave." Dougie's smile began to fade.
"Don't say those things Dougs." Maria said. The fun, sweet silence from earlier turned into a quiet sadness.
"Dougie, I promise that no matter where I go or what happens to either of us- I promise I'll remember you. I promise you'll always be my favorite hello..."
"...and my hardest goodbye." Dougie finished for Maria.
"I promise too Maria." Dougie took Maria's hand and gently placed a kiss on it.
"Best friends?" Maria asked with tears in her eyes.
"Best friends. Always." Dougie gave her a smile smile.
Maria closed her eyes, tears began rolling down Dougie's cheeks. Her heartbeat fell silent.
"I love you Maria. I promise."
