“Hurry up and get in the car,” Mom ordered Patty and I. It was almost frightening to see Mom act like that. Her happiness faded away when the waves clashed on the sandy shore, and when the trees swayed violently back an forth.
Patty galloped to the back seat of the trashy Chevrolet with her hooves pounding on to the sand. I took a seat next to her and I didn’t even have to shut the car door--The rough wind did it for me.
Mom appeared out of the fog that covered the whole beach with her blonde hair wet, sticking to her back. She forced the keys into the ignition starting the car.
“You are listening to doomsville radio,” The man on the radio announced. “Next song up: Death.”
Mom cursed silently under her breath, pushing the red button to turn off the radio.
“W-What’s happening?” I asked nervously. “Where are we going?”
Mom didn’t reply. She stepped on it--forcing the car to ride in an abnormal speed, dodging trees like a pro.
My stomach jumped to my throat with Mom driving the car so fast. I couldn’t see beyond my flapping cheeks--Everything else was a blur.
Mom came to an immediate stop, making me hit the driver’s seat.
“You see that bush over there?” She asked pointing to a huge berry bush behind an oak tree.
“Yeah,” I said starting to choke up.
“I need you and Patricia to hide behind it. Quickly, now.”
Without hesitation Patty grasped my wrist, throwing me behind the bush. God she was strong for someone I though was weak. Mom silently followed.
“I’ve gotta tell you something,” She whispered to me, running her delicate fingers through my hair. “You’re not normal. You haven’t been living the ‘mortal‘ life like you thought you were.”
“Figures,” I said, holding back heavy tears.
“Shh, Roxanne,” she ordered. “We have to be very quiet. The monster is strong in hearing. Anyway’s you’re gonna hate me so be prepared.” Mom grew silent like she did at the camp fire.
“You’re a wizard,” She continued. “I wanted to hide this from you, on behalf of your father. I can’t tell you why since it’s forbidden of me. But what you should know that all those hallucinations--”
“Are reality,” I continued for her. “At this point, I don’t care. I just want that monster to go away.”
Thundering footsteps approached the bush, tearing up everything in its way.
“Gotta go,” Mom said. She grabbed my neck, kissing me as if I was just born. “I need to distract this monster. Roxanne, I want you to become a great butt kicking wizard, and Patty…Please take care of her. Starting now Roxanne, you’re not gonna be living a regular life. Welcome to the world of wizardry--” The monster roared even louder, sounding out Mom’s words. She air kissed me goodbye, going off into the darkness.
I tried to go after her, but Patty’s grip kept me back.
“You can’t,” She warned. “I promised your mom I’d keep you safe.”
“I don’t care!” I snapped, taking my arm away from her. “She’s my mom! I-I have to save her.”
The creature’s yellow eyes brightened up the darkness, giving me a chance to have a good look at it’s slimy green body that stood 10 or 11 feet tall. It seemed impossible how its small webbed feet could carry such a heavy load.
