Chapter 1
This story began a long time ago.
We spent our lives in an enchanted place, filled with lavish parties and honors. I go by my initials, C.C., and am the mother of Charles zi Britannia. The current emperor of Britannia. I, along with the rest of my family, attended the 204th anniversary of the royal Britannian rule and the 7th birthday of my grandchild, Lelouch.
Of course, he begged me not to leave for Paris. While my decision remained firm, I decided to give him a musical locket that plays the lullaby I often sang to him since he was very young.
His eyes lit up as the soft melody played. "Oh, grandma! I love it! Thank you," he said as he embraced me. My heart fluttered with tender warmth.
Unfortunately, a story is not a story without a conflict.
A young man entered, along with another boy close to Lelouch's age. This man happened to be Schneizel el Britannia, another one of my grandchildren. You may be wondering why he was not present at the celebration, and that answer is that Schneizel was guilty of treason. My son, Charles, would not stand for such a crime and had exiled Schneizel several months ago. His presence was unwanted, despite our relations.
Charles was displeased by Schneizel's arrival.
"How dare you return to the palace?" he began, keeping his voice steady but stern. The room had gone eerily quiet upon the exiled prince's entrance.
Schneizel only chuckled, replying, "Why must you hate me, Father?"
Charles had risen from his throne while Marianne and I continued to sit. Father and son glared at each other, electricity sparking between them.
"It is all in the past. I came to congratulate our continued rule and, of course," Schneizel paused to smirk, with a glint in his eyes, "the birthday of my youngest brother."
I glanced to my side and saw Lelouch shifted uneasily, clearly uncomfortable with how his elder brother was acting. Charles seemed to know what he was dealing with. "In the past? Do you honestly believe that you could get away with betraying your own kingdom?" He dramatically waved his arm towards the doors. "Now, begone!"
Schneizel's confident facade began to wear thin.
"Old fool, you have left me with no choice. I'll place a curse on my entire family."
Gasps erupted from the crowd, nobles and royals alike. He slowly began to turn to the guests, his back to Charles. "Mark my words! I will not rest until every single one of them is dead at my feet!" Schneizel whipped out a pistol and shot a chandelier down before leaving. Glass shattered across the room, striking fear into the hearts of all present.
Consumed by his hatred of his family, Schneizel sold his soul to activate the curse that would shatter the Britannians once and for all. However, the curse did not act as we expected to. Instead of the magic causing death directly, it scattered across the entire country, purging it into malice. Many of the commoners began to feel unhappy with the royal family and rioted. Our own soldiers even turned on us, marching their way into the palace.
As my family and their servants fled, Lelouch suddenly stopped amongst the chaos and turned around.
"My locket!" he cried out before I saw him race back to his room.
I had no choice but to follow him, my pleas for him to stop going unheard. Once we had arrived in his room, I immediately spun around and locked the door. Men shouting orders and gunfire roared from the other side, and it wasn't long before they began to pound on the door.
Our only option was to flee the country, but I had no idea how at the time. My first priority was to escape the room with Lelouch, and even that seemed impossible.
To our enormous luck, a small panel from the wall opened and a servant boy squeezed himself through.
"Through the servants quarters! This way!" the child ordered as he ushered us out. I recognized him, an eleven boy that worked in the kitchens. Suzaku Kururugi, I believed his name to be. The only reason I recalled it was because his father was the last prime minister of the country we dominated.
Lelouch had retrieved his locket, and Suzaku had shut the panel behind us. I clutched my grandson tightly to me as we raced through the small hallway.
Alas, Schneizel, separated from his men, leapt down from the courtyard bridge and made a grab for Lelouch. My grandson screamed in fear and desperately struck out as I struggled to assist him. Stunned from a punch to the throat, Schneizel released Lelouch and staggered backwards. His foot slipped and he fell backwards into the frozen river. We did not linger long enough to watch him perish.
We shortly arrived at the train station, just in time as a train began to leave. I managed to leap onto the back, clutching the railing as my grandson cried out for me. My feeble hand gripped onto his as we both held on for dear life.
"Please, don't let go!" I begged, struggling to pull him onto the train with me. However, it seemed Schneizel's curse still had some power. I was too weak to haul Lelouch onboard, and I could only watch in horror as my he slipped away from my grasp. Lelouch tripped on the icy cobblestone, his head striking the floor hard.
My first instinct was to leap away from the train to his rescue, but the other passengers pulled me back and dragged me back inside the carriage.
Many lives were destroyed that night, but I had lost one of my dearest grandchildren: Lelouch vi Britannia, the youngest prince. I never saw him again.
