All I heard was someone talking to himself. It was odd. I thought only I talk to myself.
I tried to move but something was holding me down. Then, I tried to open my eyes, but they were being held closed by something.
I opened my mouth, which was surprising because everything else I couldn’t move or open; and I screamed. I screamed as loud as I possibly could. But before I could take another breath there was a large pressure on me as if someone threw a ten foot cinder block on me.
An excruciating pain followed the pressure and it felt like every bone in my body was slowly disintegrating.
I heard a laugh that was not at all my mom. It was a deep, menacing laugh. It went on even until after the pain and pressure went away.
My thoughts were scrambling, where is my mom? What about dad? Am I dead? If I scream again will the pain be back? Where am I? Whose laugh was that? What’s going to happen to me? I couldn’t clear my mind.
I felt a release on my eyes and joints, but I was afraid to move. After about ten minutes I decided to open my eyes, which worked. I looked down and metal braces were hanging loosely over a wooden table I was laying on. My shirt was off and there was a large scar down my stomach.
I was just about to jump off the table when I saw broken glass surrounding the table fifteen feet away all around.
I stood on the table and realized even fifteen feet was out of my range of jumping, even off of a raised area.
I stepped over and almost fell off of the table because of a couple of loose boards. That’s when it hit me. I pulled the loose boards off and extended one on a diagonal into the glass. I grabbed the other and walked down the diagonal board with it and placed it overtop of the glass shards.
I began to walk on the flat piece, attempting to balance. I got to the end and there was still at least five feet left.
My thoughts went off again. I didn’t bother with them. I gathered my thoughts and leapt off of the board. I was in the air but started descending way too early then I thought I would. I pushed my feet in front of my and landed just in front of a huge shard of glass.
I was shaking very hard after that. I looked around and didn’t see any way of leaving the room I was in. There were small slits at the top of the wall that let in some light, but I wouldn’t be able to fit through them. The stone walls would be too hard to break through. The only way I could escape would be to go up the chimney of the small fireplace in the corner, which was burning wood.
I looked for another way out but saw nothing. So, I sat in front of the fireplace, hoping it would die soon.
I sat, and I sat, and I sat, the wood kept burning, I watched, I searched, I couldn’t find any other escape.
I decided to take a board from over the glass and take the burning wood out of the fireplace. I pulled it out and set it aside away from anything possibly flammable. I set aside the other board and went over to the fireplace.
I looked up and saw it goes up far.
I decided to take a chance and I got a grip inside the chimney and started to climb up.
The chimney started getting smaller and even thinner. I began to crawl up, scrunching my shoulders together.
I got very close to the top, I could just barley reach if I tried. The chimney was very thin now. I could not at all squeeze any further. I used my legs to keep myself propelled and I reached and my fingertips just reached over the edge and I tried to pull myself up.
