Dedicated to Rachel

The Lumos charm was Marie's savior while in the Slammer.

It gave her something to do to pass the endless hours. She had only been there for a day and a half, and she was already miserable. At least she would be released soon. She was almost worried that the boys would see a flashing light coming from there and get curious, only to banish her immediately.

She drifted in and out of sleep, when the sharp pain reentered her skull, sending another word with it.

Alohomora.

There was something that clicked in her mind, and she remembered what it was for. She looked around cautiously, making sure no one was watching her. She held the wand in her palm, and inhaled deeply.

She made a circle with the wand and spoke firmly, "Alohomora."

It took a moment, but the lock clicked open. She gasped, and hesitantly reached for the lock to take it off. She stopped though, as soon as she saw a boy with a limp headed her way. He reached down to open the lock, but noticed it was already open.

"Did you unlock it?"

"How would I? I'm in here, there's nothing I can use to unlock it." She snapped, tucking the wand into her back pocket.

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Okay. At least you didn't try and escape." He took off the lock, helping her out.

"Thank you, Newt." She said. She wanted to tell him what happened. She wanted to tell him what she remembered. She wanted to explain that she was different.

But the little voice in her head told her to trust no one, so would that mean she couldn't trust that either?
"Newt?" She said hesitantly.

"Yes?"

"I need to talk to you. It's important."

"All right," he said after a moment, "what is it?"

"I remembered things. While I was in there. Nothing about my life, but I remembered words. Words that, when I spoke them while holding this," she held up the wand to him, "did something. Something unexplainable."

She paused, and he was silent.

"I'm different, Newt. In ways I don't understand yet. I think I was the one to make Gally freeze, I kept thinking that I wish he would stop, over and over and over, and he did.  I can do things most people can't. And it scares me, that I might lose someone I care about."

He grabbed her hand gently, gave it a squeeze, and pulled away. "You're not going to lose me anytime soon. Come on, there's someone I want you to meet. He can help you."

"Promise?"

He smiled. "Promise."
