I walk out of the door of my parent's house, my last bag tucked neatly under my left arm. They stand in the doorway and watch as I head out to my Jeep in the driveway, throwing the bag in the passenger seat before climbing in behind the wheel. My mother practically runs down the path to where my car is and rests her arm on the windowsill beside me.
" We really are going to miss you honey. Are you sure you want to take this job?" She questions, her eyes searching mine as she secretly hopes I say no.
"Yes, Mom. I'm 18 now and you know I've wanted a job like this since forever!" I responded, a smile smile spreading across my lips.
I know, I know. It's just, Los Angeles is so far away from here. You will visit, right?" She asks, using the crumpled tissue in her hand to dab a stray tear away.
"Every Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentines Day, Birthday, just like we promised. Now, if I don't leave soon I won't be able to make it before dark." I state, giving her a small hug before turning the keys in the ignition.
I pull out onto the hot, black pavement heated in the warmth of the Colorado sun. I can see my mother and father waving one last goodbye from the curb.
"We love you!" They call out loud enough for me to hear as my Jeep drives away.
I feel a small tear slip onto my cheek as a whisper "I love you too," one last time. Their figures soon becoming mere dots in my rear view mirror.
