Jules was someone full of alacrity. Even though her best friend was September, she just didn't see the point in being someone acrimonious and disparaging. The toll it had on a person like that and everyone around them was palpable. No one was happy when people were like that. One could say that Jules and September deviated from the norm. She was at one end of the spectrum all cheerful and bubbly, and Sep was at the other, all acrimonious. Their other peers were closer to the middle, and not as extreme. If you asked her, the reason for this was because: 1) they wanted to fit in, and 2) they were too indolent to develop their own personality and so either had none, or had one like everyone else (which, if everyone is the same, then it's the default and technically none of them have one).
She knew that people were skeptical about her friendship with Sep. It's not like they were being surreptitious about their opinions, because no offense to her classmates, but they were about as erudite as Sep was cheerful; once someone had formulated a conjecture, it spread like wildfire, and then everyone had that same conjecture. Neither she nor Sep bothered to rectify it, because it's not like it affected the way they went about their lives. If the time ever came that it started hurting one of them, then she'd exonerate them and mitigate or remove that pain, but as of now it hasn't, and so she won't bother to go to those lengths. Obviously the fact that they were polar opposites was ostensible, so people often thought that their personalities would have changed by now, but the pair of them were about as incorrigible as a mountain when it came to their person. Or their classmates thought that, seeing as she was the more judicious of them, there was some manipulating going on there where one was forced to be in that relationship, and couldn't extricate themselves. Which was ridiculous, really, because even if it was nowhere near conspicuous to outsiders, they were sparing themselves from the pandemonium of the rest of the world (which was really cheesy but really true).
