The rocks were old and slimy. Over the years the bridge had eroded away, It was as useless as a stump, too fragile to cross and too great to break. Always had been. Covered in green moss and feeble gravel, it was a miracle that the few kids whom played there hadn't wrecked the place already. Although simple, at the time it was considered an architectural treasure. Never before had human kind built something so... self-sustainable. But then again, if it's so utterly ordinary, why bother mentioning it?
Though no one can explain why, It was the only man-made structure left standing after the three Greats. What were the Greats? Simple. Not to be confused with the greats, The 'Greats' were three mass killing catastrophes. Three individual disasters naturally made to cause destruction. In the beginning, we called them by a different name. But after the first one hit, its name was lost in the rubble.
The first of the Greats was a expectation setter, a cold, and obvious way to signal what was to come. It was the beginning of a new ice-age. The oceans froze over and any living thing that survived had been left to fend for themselves. This was only the first, and weakest of the happenings. But it's havoc affected everything on the surface of earth. Sea creatures were an entirely different matter.
The second Great was just as cataclysmic. With an unpredictable bomb-like explosion, rendering any and all electric and mechanical devices useless. Some believed it to be a meteor strike. One used to wipe out a powerful species, much like the dinosaurs sixty-five million years ago. The vast radiation and range of the blast-zone was enough to immediately eradicate any living matter at around some 12 thousand miles. Just like that, half the earth, gone.
At last, the third and final Great. One that cannot be explained by any expert or novice, this was by far, more terrifying and disturbing than any of the other two. Humans were changing. Not evolving, morphing, at an alarming rate at that. It was first confused as a sickness, this started a riot within the remaining survivors. We called them the corrupt. Thinking that it was something they were born with. Others theorized that it may be the aftermath of the second Great.
Afraid, survivors isolated the corrupt, forcing them into the dark reality of the blast-zone. It wasn't hard at all when it came to putting them there, the corrupt were scared of their own reflection, some even volunteered.A small few, however, were furious. They believed what was being done to them was inhumane. Survivor argued that the corrupt had lost their humanity from the moment they began mutating into 'disgusting sea creatures'. This small group however, eventually grew into a powerful enemy. One that they would soon regret making.
Human kind had been stripping earth from its natural resources and life for over 200,000 years. But now our so-called reign had ended.
Earth was fighting back.
By facing us against ourselves.
