Tonight the sun was setting for the last time it ever would on this earth, and it was the prettiest sunset I've ever seen. My best friend and I drove for hours to sit on an empty beach that faced the west where we could watch the sun's seething flames become extinguished beneath the calm of the horizon one final time. It was beautiful, but only for that moment. The ride home was dark, no more than it usually was that time of night and quiet we were both trying to imagine a life without the sun, there were many things I thought about during that drive and they were everything but reality. The next day I woke up darkness washed over my room, it was pitch black from my colourless ceiling all the way to my clothing littered floor. Rayless, no streams of light peaking through my window shades even the bedside was black. Where my alarm clock emitted the dark red blinking lights of "12:00 am" like it does every minute of the day was strangely tenebrous. Only then it dawned on me: the brilliance has been taken out of this world, forever. No more warmth from the summer sun to make the flowers bloom, without the sun time doesn't even exist anymore. It'll just become a faint memory, a memory we soon will forget.

Emma loved sunsets. I knew this could be our last one, so it had to be better than all the others, I drove her hours out of town for the best view we could get, and it was worth it. The smile on her face, the amazement in her eyes as she watched the steady blaze of the sun became lost beneath the chaos of the sea made up for whatever was going to happen next. The drive back was quiet but in a way we both found comforting. We talked about the future we've always wanted but would never get, reminisced about the old times trying to re-live our good memories. She was amazing, happy, and carefree just as she always was but both of us were clearly fighting the fear we could feel in the backs of our eyes. The next morning she didn't wake up. I knew it was coming, but nothing prepared me for this, I have thought about all of the things I would feel when this moment came, and they were everything but reality. I don't know how the earth will continue to turn, there's no point in summer if Emma is not here to enjoy the flowers in their full bloom, there's not a reason to grow old if it's not with her, and that's okay because all time stopped when her heart did, and suddenly it didn't even matter if the sun came up the next day, all the light in my life had gone out. The sun had set in my world and I don't think it will ever rise again. Soon Emma will become nothing but a faint memory but she will be one I will never forget.
