Chapter 2 ~ Change of Plans

Kim Foster

Matt grins and leans down to kiss me, and I close my eyes against the morning sunlight for a second as he pressed his lips to mine. I smile back at him, perfectly content. I put my hand on his muscular chest, feeling his heartbeat, and put my other hand on his face. “I love you,” I whisper.

Matt’s grin gets even bigger. “I love you too, Kim.” He gently kisses my neck again and then rolls off me and swings his legs off the bed.

I sigh. “Are you going already?”

He nods. “I have to work, Kim. Do you want me to get fired?” he jokes.

“Of course not. But I’ll miss you.”

He stands and looks around my bedroom.

“Your shirt’s by the chair,” I point at it, and he grabs it. Pulling the sheets up around me, I sit up.

He pulls on his shirt, and winks at me before leaving the room. I sigh and get up, knowing I’m not going to get any sleep. I check my phone for texts or missed calls. Nothing from Jake. I sigh, ignoring the missed call from my father and walking out of the room. I head for the shower, but stop halfway down the hall, next to the window.

Someone’s shouting something, and I push back the curtain and look down at the road down below. A car crashed into a streetlight across the street, and there are people coming out of the houses near it, crowding around it.

I frown, worried, but there are people there already, they can help the people in the car. I turn and go into the bathroom.

The mirror shows me how bad my hair is, and I sigh and run my hands through it. My thick, wavy blonde hair is a family trait, I share it with my father and Jake. I love it, there’s just so much of it. And Matt loves playing with it while I talk to him about my new drawings or paintings, which I do so often he just nods and smiles and eventually cuts me off with a kiss. Not that I mind, obviously. And he supports me anyway, even if he doesn’t want to hear me ramble for hours.

I allow myself a moment of vanity, and just examine the girl that is Kim Foster, then turn on the shower and start pulling my clothes off. I step in and the hot water runs over my face and my shoulders. I wash my hair, and then just stand there for a few minutes, closing my eyes and letting the water make me forget my troubles.

Eventually, I turn off the shower and grab a towel. I dry my hair a bit, then wrap the towel around me and walk into the hallway. There’s a whole lot of noises outside, but I ignore them as I pass the window, convincing myself that it’s nothing major, probably just some annoyed neighbour complaining about the crash being outside the house and obstructing their view of the road, or something. They’re very loud, if that’s the case.

I think about what to get from the fridge, and hum a song to myself as I walk down the stairs. A car door closes outside, and there’s footsteps, someone’s running up to the door. I swallow and look around me, not entirely sure what I’m looking for. I feel a little vulnerable in nothing but a towel.

I really hope Matt locked the door behind him.

The person tries the door handle, and nothing happens. Thank god. Then I hear the rattle of keys, and sigh in relief. It’s probably just Jake, home early for some reason. Matt wouldn’t be back already, and it’s obviously not Dad, he’s still away.

Wait, isn’t Jake staying with Leo for the night?

Then the door opens and Matt steps in, then slams the door shut behind him. “Kim!”
