I sat on the balcony looking out over the main street of Mt.Morris, with my legs pulled up to my chest and my chin resting on them. It was getting colder, and the day was ending with calm gusts of Spring wind. The sky was an orange and blue mix with sparse clouds, poufy and dainty.
Last I cared to check the time it was 7:34, and it felt like I had been awake for more than just twelve hours. So many thoughts swirled in my head, with emotions it didn't make it any better. I could only think about how I might not be able to protect my friends if I can get to them, and how I might not even be able to make it to my brother's area...
Lord am I supposed to protect my friends? Is it really my purpose, or just something I feel is good for me? What is my purpose?
Just then I heard a shuffling below, likely to be yet another zed that's wandered it's way onto my property. So I climbed back inside my window and grabbed up my backpack and Harmony and Melody, then quietly stepped downstairs. I checked out each window around the house to ensure that was the only zombie nearby. Then I peered out the back door into the yard to spot the zombie, and it was pushing the garage door open, clearly not the one that weighed more than 120 pounds. So I stepped out slowly and silently, looked around again, then went in for the kill.
Once I was back inside I sighed in relief and for how much tension I felt. It was such a tedious process, and seemed ridiculous but was safe and affective. I just need to find a better place to be able to kill a zombie if it does wander onto my property. It was beginning to get a little dark, and I needed to do something about covering the windows to keep all light from inside showing out. So I took a roll of duct tape from the garage and a roll I had in my room, along with some masking tape, and began taping clothes over the windows. Once I was finished I had only some of my duct tape left and half of the roll of masking tape left.
I felt in the mood to go to my friends house which just so happened to be behind me.
Why haven't I thought to go over to Douglas'?
So I begin preparations for a sunset mission. I start with my weapons first. I clean Melody and Harmony as well as the butcher knife, then grab the black metal rod I salvaged from a sweeper- you know one of those things that you push around like a vacuum but isn't motorized? Whatever. So I wrap the rod in electrical tape to hide its shine. There are three segments to the rod so I can make it either a yard long, two feet long, or a foot long. It's great for when I need to do some parkour.
Anyway! I notice my keychain, and it has a broken lanyard that is just two ribbons attached to a clip. Suddenly I have an idea.
I take some scarfs and pull them between my belt and pants so they hang behind me. Like in a game of flag football, the first thing an offensive player goes for are the ribbons. A zombie will grab the scarf- not only alerting me if I was unaware of it but also giving me the chance to just leave that scarf behind instead of worrying about breaking the zeds grasp. I then get my thickest hoodie, and start layering duct tape on the shoulders and arms. It didn't look like enough so I grabbed two shirts and a few safety pins, making for quick and simple vambraces. I did the same with my legs.
Then I went into the garage, and found a crowbar. It wouldn't do much damage as a weapon but if necessary I could open a door or two. I leave the baseball bat behind, it is bulky, and heavy. Not for a fight in a house. If there is a fight. It could be possible.
I crept across the lawn of the darkened yard and onto the neighbor's property to a hole in the fence. It went straight to my friends house. I looked around, to the road, and around the neighbor's yard and then crawled through the small hole. The backyard was clean and peaceful as ever, making me feel out of place for what I was doing- but only for a moment. I cross the yard, my heart racing, expecting a zombie to lunge out at me any time now.
I finally got onto the porch, at the back door I was still crouched. I slowly opened the storm door than began slowly turning the nob for the next door. Suddenly the door swung open and a person, attempting to run out, tripped over me and I was sprawled out on the porch while he lay next to me. A quick glance shows him to be Douglas, but not with a greeting smile. He was scrambling to his feet while his eyes remained locked in the doorway, staring at the swaying figure. It was his grandfather. Was.
I started moving after Douglas and he rolled down the steps of the porch, not noticing pain but still moving towards the fence gate. Which led to the drive way. Which was open to the road. Which was where zombies would see us. Before Douglas started opening the gate I grabbed him by his shirt collar and hauled him around to face the yard. I pushed him in the direction of the hole in the fence and said,
"Simon says go that way!" although he paused for a bit he began running towards the fence. I turned back to see the zed laying on the ground before the steps, obviously taking a fall.So I took this chance. With one swift movement I dropped the blade of Harmony down and severed the spine of the zombie. When I turned back to the fence I saw Douglas staring in shock, and I just ran over to the hole and said,
"Death doesn't wait for slow minds. Come back to reality and start climbing through." With that I climbed through and he after me. He was still in shock when we got back home.
