(Alicia’s POV)
“Morning, Marge!” I walk into the kitchen cheerfully, having gotten a good night’s sleep. I feel fresh and wide-awake for once, which is a rare feeling for me at 7:30 am on a Monday. I must still be on France time.
“Hey there, Alicia! How was Paris?” She starts loading some pancakes onto her plate.
The kitchen is actually pretty lively during breakfast time here at the White House. We’ve got all the assistants, workers, housekeepers, secret service, and whoever else dropping by for delicious food prepared by Maria and her team. Often enough, vice president Charles Nelson will grab a scone or a bagel on his way to meet my Dad. People are always coming and going.
“Paris was……fun,” I reply lightly, buttering my toast. I love France, but honestly, it was like every other political trip I’ve gone on. I didn’t really get to experience the place. Just had to pose for lots of pictures.
“I loved Paris when I was studying there. I’ve always wanted to go back,” she sighs wistfully, cutting up her pancakes.
“So why don’t you?” I question blatantly.
“Alicia, do you know how busy your father keeps me?” she raises an eyebrow.
“Then quit,” I shrug, watching as a few men in suits come in, grab cups of coffee, and leave. I have no idea who they are. I also don’t know who this woman is serving herself fruit. She could be a distinguished photojournalist, or a hobo off the street as far as I know. It’s weird living in a house constantly full of strangers.
“Quit?! Ha! Easy for you to say,” Marge laughs nasally, her high-pitched voice stinging my ears. I think she’s a very nice woman, but she’s also a little bit annoying. She’s a hard worker, which makes her a great assistant for my Dad, but sadly she’s the butt of many jokes around here. Corey, my Dad’s personal security, dubbed her Large Marge. Poor woman.
“Look, all I’m saying is you should go for what you want. If you want to go to Paris, go to Paris!” I exclaim. I’ve never understood why people hold themselves back all the time.
She nods thoughtfully, chewing on a piece of bacon. “I will someday. Now, are you excited to go back to school?”
“Yes!” I exclaim, adjusting my new pleated skirt. I go to Georgetown Day School, which I love. I actually like learning. I know, nerd alert. My two best friends go there, as well as my boyfriend, so I have a pretty good set up. Taking classes and interacting with kids my age brings a sense of normalcy to my life. I’m just worried because I missed the first week of school to go to France, and I’m going to be behind. And when you’re in all AP classes, that’s not good.
“Gosh, Alicia, senior year!” she squeals, “It’s a huge deal! You’ll have to start looking at colleges and everything!”
I’ve been secretly researching Universities in Spain, England, Germany, Brazil, and others. I’m way ahead of the game.
“I better start that,” I mumble, biting into my toast.
“You really should. You don’t want to fall behind-“
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” I glance up and beam at the sight of Sarah bounding into the kitchen, “LEESH!!!!!!!!!!”
“SARAH!!!!!!!!!!” I immediately sprint into the arms of my friend, squeezing her tightly. “I MISSED YOU!!!!!!!!”
“LEESH!!!!! MY GIRL!!!!!!” Nicole screams, running in after Sarah. She throws her arms around the both of us, and we all jump up and down happily, tangled together.
