Sink or Swim
I’ve been told
To choose only
from the two:
sink or swim
At first I thought
I should swim.
I felt so free;
I felt fulfilled.
I moved my arms
right first, then left.
Simultaneously, my legs
again, right then left.
but along the way
exhaustion met my eyes
I plunged into the
bottom of the ocean
I knew I was
never to see
the light nor feel
the warmth again
I used to say
I loved the surface
but then I ceased
to breathe again.
