I can’t believe the day has finally come. I’m standing on Platform 9 ¾ about ready to board the Hogwarts Express. Mama and Daddy are here to see me off. I’m a little nervous, but there are plenty of Weasley cousins attending Hogwarts this year. It’s cousin James’ first year too and Victoire will be there, if I really get scared. I know what you’re thinking, I’m going to Hogwarts, the greatest school ever, what’s to be afraid of? Well, my stories a little different…
It all began a week after my eleventh birthday. I’m Roxanne, by the way, Roxanne Weasley. I have ginger hair like my daddy and hazel eyes like my mama. My Daddy is George Weasley, sole proprietor or Weasley Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley. I’m sure you’re familiar with the place. Anyway, I was checking the mail box everyday. James had already gotten his Hogwarts letter, so mine couldn’t be far behind. Every day I’d rush to the mail box after the mail lady would make her delivery and hold my breath as I looked at each envelope. Always disappointed when I’d discovered no letter for me.
Finally, Mama, seeing my distressed, asked me, “What are you looking for?”
“My letter, Mama.”
“What letter?” she asked.
“My letter to Hogwarts! James already received his and he‘s not even eleven yet. I’ve been 11 years old for a week now. Shouldn’t I have already received mine?”
“You’re not getting a letter!” Ricky screamed. Rickey, whose full name is Frederick George Weasley, is my little brother. Three years younger than me and a brat. He was named after daddy and daddy’s twin brother. I never met my Uncle Fred, he was killed in the Second Wizarding War before I was born.
“Squibs don’t get letters to Hogwarts.” teased Ricky.
“Shut-up, Ricky!” I shouted. To be honest, I was concerned that perhaps I was a squib. After all, I still hadn’t received my powers. Ricky was already able to do all kinds of magical things (even though mama didn’t like him doing them.) But, I remember seeing a movie about kids who went to a superhero high school. The boy in the movie didn’t get his powers until he was in school. Surely, once I get into Hogwarts, my powers will emerge.
But mama got a funny look on her face. She kissed me on the top of the head and told me and Ricky to go get cleaned up for dinner. While we were upstairs washing our hands, I heard daddy come home through the floo-network, that’s how he traveled back and forth to work. It looked scary to me, but anyway, when I walked into the kitchen Mama and Daddy had been whispering to each other and the minute they saw me, they stopped talking. Something was definitely up.
After dinner, daddy took Ricky to Grandma and Grandpa Weasley’s. Ricky wasn’t afraid to travel by floo. Mama and I always travel by car, but Mama’s a muggle. The only one in the family, or so I thought.
When Daddy got back, they set me down for a talk. One I may never recover from.
