"Dabria! Wake up! You're gonna be late for the bus!" My Aunt Gabby yelled from my doorway.
As soon as she yelled my eyes immediately shot open and I jumped out of bed.
"Oh no, my alarm clock didn't work!" I groaned.
"Make it work!" Aunt Gabby retorted back and then I heard the retreating footsteps.
"Well, there goes my good mood." I mumbled under my breath.
Begrudgingly, I went through the motions of any typical school morning, until I looked in the mirror to brush my hair up and out of my face. Just as I was pulling my hair up into a ponytail, I noticed something didn't seem quite right.
My skin seemed paler than usual. I mean, I'm pale but my skin looked almost WHITE. Am I sick? I don't feel sick. Am I coming down with something?
Whatever. It's probably nothing.
That is what I thought until I open my mouth to brush my teeth. What is this?
Two fangs are poking out of my gums. I MUST be dreaming. I look like some sort of vampire from one of my novels! I smacked my lips, suddenly feeling thirsty.
I reach for my cup of water but pull back inches from the cup. Is it really water I want? Suddenly just thinking of drinking water makes me sick to my stomach. I crave something sweet and tingly. Something that slides down smoothly.
No, no, no, no, no.
No!
I threw on my jacket, put on my backpack, and ran across the house, shouting, "Bye Aunt Gabby, I'm going to school!" While holding my hand to my mouth so I didn't show my fangs.
My aunt thinks I am walking the ten minutes to my bus stop, but really I'm going in the opposite direction. How can I go to school with fangs?
For one thing, people will call me weird. Secondly, they might run away from me. Third, they might try to pull out my "fake" fangs.
I go the normal way first but once I turn the corner, I turn into an alley. I put my hand down and close my mouth over my fangs. I walk through the alley and across the street and keep walking further until I am in an alley two miles away.
I take my backpack off and put it up against the wall. Put my head on top of it and fall asleep.
