Chapter 2

Summers in Alabma:

Summer of '69-Bryan Adams

After that day when I was five years old me and that boy never stopped being friends. I soon learned that his name was Thomas. He was a poor boy but life for him was great.

He was so charming. I told him everything and anything. There was this old tree down by the lake and one day we decided to climb it. It soon became out little spot to hang out.

We brought blankets and food to eat whenever we could go up to the tree. I never told my mother that I was friends with Thomas.

It's not that I purposly didn't want to I just didn't remember to do so.

One day we climbed the tee together it was my last day in Alabama for the summer and I was to be starting school back home on Monday.

We were 9 years old and life was great. We were talking about life and what we wanted to do with it.

"I want to be a carpenter" he said to me.

I just laughed at him" Thomas ya'll can't be a carpenter you need to be at home with me looking after our babies".

We was young at the time that we didn't even think about it. But as we got older things started to change. we still were best friends but we grew closer in a different way. Thats when I came over the summer before '74.

It was my last day and Thomas had come to see me off. I went to hug him but instead he kissed me and told me he would write soon.

I was in a daze after that. I always thought we would be friends but after that point I never thought about him the same way again.

The year flew in as it always did and soon we were all hoping in our car to visit our relatives again. Mama was in her fancy clothes as always and daddy was in his suit.

Mama always made me and my sisters, Louise and Rachel. who were 2 and 3 years older than me, were fancy dresses when visiting our rich family in Alabama.

I couldn't wait to meet Tom again. After I left last summer we never talked about the kiss again. But I knew it meant something and this summer I was gonna find out.
