Sky Temple, Earthrealm.
A fierce battle between Earthrealm's warriors and the Netherrealm's demons ensued.
Shinnok, former Elder God and ruler of the Netherrealm seeked to destroy Earthrealm and get his revenge on the Elder Gods and Raiden by corrupting the Jinsei, Earth's life force.
His plans however were foiled and the Jinsei has been purified. Once everything returned to normal the Elder Gods, tired of Shinnok's actions, ordered Raiden to execute the fallen Elder God and destroy his amulet.
Such action also restored the souls of those who lost their lives during Shao Kahn's invasion which happened years before.
Earthrealm would finally know peace now that neither Outworld nor the Netherrealm were going to invade them again.
Or so they thought...
Five years have passed since Shinnok's defeat.
It was night time in Outworld, rain fell on the ground and a cold wind blew as the inhabitants were sleeping in their homes.
On this moment a green portal appeared. An hooded figure stepped in, followed by a giant warrior carriying a big weapon. The mysterious individuals then marched until he reached a giant palace, its gates closed.
The hooded stranger grinned, his hands now emitting a green aura, and proceeded to lift up the gates without making noise, his minion still following him.
It appeared no one entered the structure as the main hall was full of dust. Inside it, many tombs laid on the ground, all of them bearing a symbol representing a dragon.
The hooded figure proceeded to explore the surroundings until he noticed something that caught his attention: a big room stood before him, a sarcophagus bearing the same dragon symbol laid inside, but this one was larger than the others.
Upon closer inspection, the intruder realized that the place was no mere temple, but a mausoleum. And the sarcophagus that he was now facing belonged to Outworld's most ruthless Emperor, one that Shao Kahn himself used to fear.
The sorcerer has found what he was looking for. Taking off a green glowing stone from his pockets, the mysterious figure smirked and casted a spell so powerful, that the darkened skies who were outside turned green.
Everything went silent for a few moments.
The rain stopped falling from the sky and the cold wind ceased to exist.
Few seconds later, the tombs started opening one by one and rotting corpses started to walk all around the structure, and the Emperor's sarcophagus was the last one to be opened.Once the former Emperor returned to walk again, the necromancer was surprised to see that the despot's body was still intact unlike the mummified army.
He then kneeled before him.."Welcome back, my Dragon King..."
