There's a difference between "when did you realize?" and "when did you choose?". Both questions can be unpleasant to answer, but the first one just assumes that you didn't always know (which is true in some cases) whereas the second one is just plain gross and degrading. Why would I choose to be apart of the minority, why would I choose to have worry about my safety, why would I choose to be dehumanize by my peers, etc.? If I really had a choice, wouldn't it have made more sense to choose the opposite of what I actually am? Wouldn't I have chosen to be normal?
