"Beep! Beep! Beep!" I slam my hand down on my alarm as I take a glance at my clock. Great, 6:30. I shove off the covers, and put my stuffed hippo on my pillow. Yes, I still sleep with it even though I'm 16. Greeting the cool air that surrounds my bed, I take a look around my dark, small room. I go down the hallway, tip-toeing past my dad's room. Then I pause and listen, trying to hear if he's asleep. I hear soft snoring and feel a little bit of hope stirring in my heart. 'He's actually sleeping 'I think to myself.
After my mom and brother died last year, he's been a mess. I twirl a stray strand of black hair around my finger that fell out of my messy ponytail. As I enter my small bathroom, I look at my reflection in the mirror, cringing a little. My eyes are a pale blue at the moment, but that will probably change throughout the course of the day. My eyes change color based off of my emotions. Crap, I fell asleep without washing my face last night... I look around the dimly lit bathroom, and seize my face wash in my hand. Putting some of the scrub on my hands, I go through the routine of washing my face like I normally do, I brush my hair, wincing whenever I come across a tangle in my ridiculously straight, thin hair. After that, I do a quick braid to the side, finally managing to make my mid-waist long hair cooperate.
Going back into my room, I shed my pajamas and toss them into my clothes hamper. I walk zombie-like to my dresser, and open the top drawer, pulling out a white shirt with black sleeves and then open the bottom drawer, bending down to pull out my grey and black skinny jeans. I grab a fresh pair of underwear, and change. After I'm dressed, I snatch my black hoodie from my door handle, as well as my phone. My headphones are already plugged into the jack, and I tiptoe past my dad's room again on my way to the kitchen. I grab a ripe red apple off of the counter, and get my dad's medication from the cabinet. Then I write a note to my dad telling him to remember to take his medication, and that I will be home late.
I shove my feet into my sneakers, grab my backpack, and walk out the door. I take the path through the woods, and check the time. I have a while before school starts, so I sit down, and pull out a book. Then from somewhere in the woods surrounding me, I hear a branch snap, and I see a black bird perched on a branch above me. I stare at it's beady eyes, and pointed beak. It screams at me and I look away. I place the book in front of me, and read aloud all of the words I need to. I see a figure appear before me, and it speaks to me.
"What do you need help with today Lilly?" The figure becomes clearer, and I am now aware that I have called on my favorite demon. We have a mutual respect for each other, because he knows I don't call on him and his kind just for fun, I call on his kind because I want to know more about them, and because they are the best company I have. I don't really have friends, you see. I'm very, very quiet, and teachers know not to call on me because I won't answer. I gave them a note at the beginning of this school year telling them not to call on me, and that if they wanted, after class I could bring up a notebook and show them my answers to questions they've asked, and the notes that I took. So far, it's worked. Many just call me a mute.
"Today, I just need to be able to get through it without killing someone- as much as you would like me to, I can't stand attention, and that would get me all SORTS of attention. So no killing today." I tell Aaron that I had another nightmare last night, and we talked about what it could mean, and how to stop them. Even though nightmares aren't necessarily a bad thing, I don't like mine being so frequent.
Taking a look at my phone, I see that I need to leave and go to school. I bid farewell to Aaron and make my way to the bus stop.
