PrologueWe all know what happened to President John F. Kennedy that fateful day in November...but what if things had been different? What if he'd lived and not only that...but Jackie had been pregnant. And that little girl was the President's saving grace from the demons that plagued him following the attempt on his life.
Chapter 1
"Goddamnit Jackie! Man down!" Jack shouted as Jackie leaped into his arms pushing him down onto the bed as soon as the nurse had allowed her into the hospital room.
She smiled and kissed his forehead gently "I'm so glad you're okay. You...you have no idea how scared I was. I heard the shots and then you...you clutching your shoulder. I thought you were being taken from me!" Jackie buried her face in his chest careful to avoid his bandaged shoulder.
Jack sighed and gently ran his hand along her back. "They failed Jacqueline. No one is taking me from you. Or from our kids."
Jackie looked up. "I couldn't...Lady Bird she asked me how I was feeling with the baby when they rushed you in and I..." She covered her face. "Jack! I couldn't even fathom raising Caroline and John John without you! Let alone this baby!"
Jack watched her for a moment and then laid a hand on her stomach. The bump that was their miracle baby was hardly visible and with every sob that came from Jackie, Jack's eyes grew wetter.
Chapter 2
The following morning security had been tightened and everyone on Kennedy's team held their breath as Jackie led her husband to Air Force One.
Jackie had been adamant that the press see them. Let them see that the President was not going down without a fight.
They boarded the steps to Air Force One quickly and quietly. Not even stopping to wave good-bye to the city that had caused them so much pain.
Jack sat slowly into his seat and allowed Jackie to hover over him helping with his seatbelt and adjusting his sling. "You doing okay?" She murmured quietly as Vice President Johnson and his wife boarded.
"I'm doing fine." He replied quickly.
She watched him as the Johnsons' walked past him and then nodded slowly while taking her seat. Deep down though, Jackie knew that he was not doing fine. That in the months to follow Jack would put up more of a fight then he ever had.
Chapter 3
"We're glad you're back Mr. President." Andrew Hill, the President's advisor, said as he met Jack and Jackie in the foyer of the White House.
"Thanks." Jack murmured in response looking around as if this was the first time he'd ever stood in this room.
Children's laughter quickly filled the room as Caroline and John-John burst through the doors. Jackie smiled widely as she knelt to hug her small children.
"I missed you!" Caroline shrieked as she threw her arms around her mother.
"We missed you too, darling." She replied watching Jack over their children's head.
"When you're feeling up to it, Mr. President...we need to discuss the events that happened in Dallas." Andrew said as he backed up towards the door.
"What happened, Daddy?" Caroline asked curiously.
Jack nodded and ignored his daughter.
"Daddy just got a boo-boo. You know like when you fell and skinned your knee last week?" Jackie answered for him.
"Oh."
Jackie stood up. "It's far past your bed times. Let's go my little monkeys." She turned towards Jack. "I'll met you upstairs."
