The Dark

People are always telling me that the darkness is nothing to be afraid of. They were wrong.  Always be afraid of the dark.

I had just gotten done eating my dinner and was settling down into my nighttime routine. First, I would brush my teeth and then I would change.  I thanked my mother in my head for getting me my extra bright lamp for my room.

I settled down and started reading Insomnia by Stephen King.  I will tell you this; that man is a one of a kind artist with words.  I got to about pg. 156 and my eyelids started to droop with exhaustion.

Jeez. I must be extremely tired.  I had gotten a whole days worth of work done on my family's farm. I loved the place, but it was just so... desolate. I only really had the animals around at this time. My parents had gone to a concert together and I was stuck at home to do chores.  Yay.

I jerked myself awake, hoping to at least stay awake another hour.   It was about 10:00 Pm and they wouldn't be home for another few hours.

    Knock.  Knock. KNOCK!

I got up, expecting my parents to be back. But why would they be back this early?

I opened the front door cautiously and looked outside. Nothing. Absolutely nothing out here except darkness. I turned and walked back in but suddenly stopped. Wasn't it weird that there was a knock and the door and no one around to atone for it? I turned back, grabbed a flashlight from the self, and walked outside to look around.

Brr.... Why am I even doing this? I was freezing my ass off in the cold, wearing a tank top and shorts for pajamas. I wasn't really finding anything. I turned back, walked to my door and stopped. It was open. How though? I closed it when I left hadn't I?
