"i know, i love you too."

i always smiled at her with reassurance even though fragments of my heart were torn into pieces with every word. she brushed her hair behind her ear, wiping away the tears that littered her cheeks. i never really saw her cry. in fact, i felt as if i'd never seen her cry. this vulnerability had been so rare.

"thank you for always being there for me," she smiled, light entering the room just from the upturning of her lips.

"i would never not be there for you."

i grabbed her face between my palms and wiped away her tears with my thumbs. i so desperately wanted to lean forward and kiss those sweet, chapped lips of hers, but instead i let her place her hands over mine, stroking the back of my hand lovingly. she looked down in her lap, refusing to meet my stare. i couldn't help it, it's hard to not stare at someone you love.

she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around my waist, and i draped my arms over her shoulders, scratching the back of her head. she rested her face into my shoulder and we stood like that, enveloped in each other's warmth.

i just hoped she couldn't feel my heart beating out of my chest.
