Turning Page - Sleeping At Last
Dean's POV
It was ridiculously bright right now for no reason at all. As if the sun wasn't enough of a wake up call, the birds were in full swing right outside the window by my head squawking about god knows what. I groan shielding my eyes from the sun as I rolled over and plucked the big bulky watch from off the coffee table.
It had been an anniversary gift from Leah and I hated it at first glance, but she loved it and when Leah loves something, there is no turning back. She even had this way about her of changing your mind for you and just like that the ugly thing had become one of my favorite pieces. The watch read 6:25 am. I groaned a little more, sure I'd permanently blown my back out on the crap couch. I had slept on the shitty way too small loveseat to give Nova the space and time she needed with Leah. Especially after all she had been through.
The thoughts of the night before stirred in the pit of my stomach. I couldn't shake the look that she had given me out my mind. I could only describe it as the look of pure terror. She was scared of me even though it wasn't me that she was actually seeing. Either was it wasn't my most shinning moment. I shook the dark thoughts aside long enough for me to stand and make my way toward the little guest bathroom off the main hallway. I flipped on the light and was greeted with the sight of myself in the mirror. Dark circles had formed overnight under my sunken eyes from the lack of sleep and I was clearly overdue for a haircut. I grunt gruffly and turn toward the toilet to relieve myself before going back over to the sink to wash my hands. I decided that I'd try and quietly go get a fresh set of clothes from the bedroom to have a hot shower in hopes that it would relax the kinks in my back and shoulders. I dried my hands and left the bathroom turning the light off behind me.
I crept up the steps quietly, the cool wood under my bare feet creaking in some places due to old age. Once at the top step I take a small detour to peer into the girls room where Poppy is sleeping soundly. The large bed almost seemed to swallow her little frame whole while the spacious room's floor was already a mess with stuffies and toys. After her bath last night she had insisted we go through and name every stuffie they had.
"So that they feel included in the family." She had insisted.
Every. Single. One.
By the end of the task I couldn't deny that it was nice to sit with her and watch her perfect plump lips pull up to smile whimsically at me when I offer up the perfect name. Her thick lashes bat over her blue-green Bambi-like eyes as she taps those lips with her index finger, thinks up a name of her own. Once they were all named properly she wanted them all to sleep with her in the large bed so she wasn't alone. When I tried to convince her to only choose a few she turned those soft eyes into her weapons to get me to change my mind.
It of course works with little to no effort on her end. So we tried our best to pile them all into the bed with her and it worked....for the most part discounting the stuffies who jumped ship and rested just on the floor next to the bed.
I couldn't help my little smirk as I pulled the door closed again and continued on with my mission. I walked the short few strides down the remainder of the hall and I opened the door slow. Once it was open enough I popped my head inside to take a look.
Nova and Leah were wrapped up together in each other's arms as if they were a singular person. Poppy's leg was sandwiched between Leah's with her head resting gingerly on her breast. The sheets were a mess but the both seemed to be in a comfortable slumber. I admired the moment for a second or two as I thought about how much Leah had wanted this. She deserved this happiness. I then walked over to the large wooden drawers and slide them open slow, pulling out a pair of boxers briefs, socks, jeans, and a tee shirt.
