Chapter 11: A walk in the past

It’s a dark and cloudy night; the air is chilled and all is too quiet on midnight’s eve. But in the distance a fire can be seen. It brightens up the night sky as it burns brighter with every passing minute. Soon the sound of people screaming in horror can be heard from miles, and the sound of gun shots can be heard! A town is under a bandit raid; helpless in its need to defend itself. Innocents are running through the streets trying to escape! But, they are quickly cut off by a squad of bandits and are cut down in a storm of bullets. A young mother runs through the streets looking for her lost son in a desperate hope to find him among the chaos.

Young Mother: “Joseph! Joseph! Where are you?!”

She manages to avoid the bandits for a while as she continues her search through the town, until she runs into a building that is occupied by a few bandits. They turn around and aim their weapons at her. She slowly backs away into the street where she bumps into another bandit. They all give her a cold look, and she knows this is where she will meet her end. The young mother drops to her knees, tears pouring out of her face. She looks up at her soon to be executors and manages to utter, “Please... I just want to find my son.” The bandits all look at each other and each point their guns at a vital spot on her body. The young mother closes her eyes and thinks about her only child....

On the other side of town a young boy is hiding in a cabinet. He hears the scream of the town folks outside and covers his ears trying to drown out the noise. He remembers the words of his father before he left, “Joseph stay in this cabinet no matter what you hear, no matter what happens ok!” he remembers that was about 30 min ago. He begins to wonder where his mother and father are when he starts to smell smoke! He opens the cabinet door and sees that his house is set ablaze! His instincts tell him to run despite what his father says, as he escapes the building. Joseph looks around and sees the horrors of life. His fellow villagers are dying on the ground, the streets running red with blood. He sees his own reflection in a pool of blood, he smells the odor of burning bodies in the air, and finally the feeling of nausea sets over him and he throws up.

Joseph begins to wonder through the town, seeing everything he once knew being destroyed before him, buildings collapsing around him, friend’s screams being heard in the air, and the thought that his parents are also dead brings his soul into a deeper depression. Soon he is a ghost wandering through this hell until he hears his mother voice! He looks around desperately trying to find her. He follows her voice until he sees her lying in a pool of blood.

“Mother!!” shouts Joseph as he rushes over to her side.

Joseph’s mother: “Joseph... mi vida... I’m sorry you have to see all this... but now you have to run... run far away from here as you can. Joseph remember that I... love.... you....”

Joseph: “NO! Mother I’m not leaving you! Please don’t die! I can go find father and we’ll fix you! Just please give me a minute to find him...” He begins to cry uncontrollably as his tears roll off of his chin. He lays his head on his mother’s chest weeping loudly.

He looks into his mothers face, but her life had already left her body. Joseph starts to shake her in an attempt to get her to open her eyes, but his efforts are meaningless. He continues to shake her as a bandit walks up behind him and points his gun at his head. Joseph turns around and looks up at the man and says, “Mister... my mommy... is... d-d-d-dead.... can’t you... help me... bring her... back?” in between sobs he begins to rub his eyes trying to clear the tears from his face. The bandit looks down at Joseph feeling sad for him. He continues to point his gun at him and finds that he is having a difficult time pulling the trigger. He sighs and says to himself, “Oh man this kid is way too young... He’s like what five? Maybe six? I’m sorry little guy, but I have to follow my orders...” He begins to squeeze the trigger slowly as he stares into Joseph’s pain filled face.
