Chapter 1

(Waverley's POV)

The salty air was sharp and the crescent moon cut across the star less sky in one smooth motion.
"This would be the night." I thought to myself as I gathered my twelve sisters and set eyes on the large ship of cargo slicing through the icy waves in the distance.
"Right girls, this is it. Waverley, Lorelei, Meredith, Nerin and Cleadora come with me around the back of the boat, circle from the back and sing your souls out. Ocarina, Venus, Pearl, Seraphina, Nerissa and Marina, I want you to swim ahead and distract the sailors whilst the rest of us climb on board and grab the innocent little sailors and drag them to their deaths." Said Cordelia, my oldest sister. Everyone cackled and adjusted their clams ready to lure the men towards the dark ocean.
We hadn't successfully captured a ship of this size for months and everyone was ready for a new deep sea companion. I had no problem with what we did, it was what we were made to do. To sink ships for new places to live and save corpses to keep us company.
"Oh the bastards!" Cordelia exclaimed as she saw another clan of mermaids with their eyes also fixed on our ship. Without another word we all darted towards the galleon at exceptional speeds. The rush of adrenaline from a good hunt put me on such a high that I could out swim my sisters and take my place in the water at the side of the ship and start singing before others even swam close.
"Waverley! Get on board." I heard Seraphina call.
Without the knowledge of the sailors, I used my neck slicing nails to drag myself on board and position my tail upon a barrel.
"Oi!" I heard a sailor call. "How did you get up here?"
He only looked about sixteen, the same age as me.
"Why you're a very young sailor aren't you darling." I said batting my eyes and extending my arms towards him.
"Get off the ship you beast." He called
"Now now dear, I only wanted to talk to someone." I said grabbing his arms and pulling him tight to my chest.
Three song notes was all it took before I crushed his soft lips against mine and let my tongue explore his warm mouth. He did not pull away. They never pull away. My sisters slowly formed a ring around the ship and burst into song whilst the allocated mermaids climbed aboard. Another sailor came onto the deck.
"Oi. Get off my boat you wench. It's bad luck." He shouted at us.
My victim and I turned our heads to look at him for a second then resumed viciously interlocking and sharing saliva. He picked me up onto his lap and grabbed my waist tight. Oh how naïve I thought him. But as his hands caressed my delicate scales I tingled for the fist time. I decided it was the heat from his hands, nothing else.

Soon the deck was filled with couples that constituted of mermaids and sailors and the song of my other sisters belting out. Slowly the others slid back into the water, asking the men to jump in too, which they did. They always do. However, I was so lost in the moment that I didn't notice until the deck was empty and singing had stopped. I pulled away from my sailor and a string of glistening saliva kept us connected for a little while longer. He slowly ran his hands through his deep luscious brown hair then twisted my loose light brown and aquamarine curls whist slowly caressing the natural curves of my jaw and neck. My deep sapphire eyes met with his emeralds as I looked up and then I knew I couldn't keep him.
