Chapter One: Alone
Ronnie's P.O.V
Call it magic, call it true. Call it magic, when I'm with you.
"Veronica!"
I rolled over, pretending I didn't hear my hurried mother and turned my music up.
"Veronica!"
I huffed, taking the headphones out of my ears, and grudgingly tore myself away from my comfortable mattress.
"We're going to be late! And you are not making us late!" My mother yelled doesperately from downstairs.
"Coming, Jesus." I mumbled, throwing on jeans and a T-shirt.
I trudged down the stairs slowly, dreading the new day ahead. Another day without him.
"There you are, thank God! Hurry up will you." My anxious mother said, turning to me and revealing her perfectly made-up face and crisp work clothes. Only I knew that under the layers of make-up she looked like she hadn't slept in years.
I gave her a small fake smile, the one I had learned to master, and grabbed an apple from the counter, biting into it lazily.
"How are you today? You have been taking your medicine right?" She asked, worriedly checking my disheveled appearance from over her shoulder.
I rolled my eyes, mumbling, "Yes mother."
Of course she has to ask. Of course she has to think something's wrong because my hairs tangled and I don't have a full face of makeup on every day of the god damn year. Hell, something is wrong, but it's not something she can fix with her appointments and worried looks. It's a scar that has cut a year too deep, and the way things are going, will never heal.
"Doctor McKenny's waiting for you, let's go." She said, already halfway out the door.
I followed her like a puppy dog and got into her very snobby and very boring black Lexus, slamming the door behind me.
"Don't do that, you'll break the glass. I paid more for this car than your college tuition."
I rolled my eyes for what seemed like the hundredth time today and it was only eight o'clock in the morning.
"You don't have to act like that, Veronica. You know your father wouldn't have wanted you to be disrespectful." She said smugly, turning the corner.
"Don't," I said, gritting my teeth, "Act like you care what he would have wanted."
She frowned and turned up her classical music as we rode along in tense silence to my appointment.
••••••••••••••••
"Mrs. King, nice to see you," my mother said in her usual charming, put together way.
"Oh hello Kendra, how are you? Here for Doctor McKenny?"
"I'm doing well, thank you. And yes I'm here for Veronica's check up."
"He'll be right out dear," Mrs. King smiled, her grey curls swaying with her movements.
My mother nodded and sat beside me in Doctor McKenny's polished waiting room, tapping her knee impatiently as she checked her countless e-mails.
I sighed, pulling out my phone and putting my headphones back on. The music poured through the small speakers, instantly make me feel better. I closed my eyes and let my mind clear, just focusing on the beautifully done guitar riffs and lyrics that seemed like they were written for me. I was moments from peaceful sleep, before my headphone was ripped out of my ear.
