Blair was having a completely average morning. She had her tea, took a shower, you know, the normal routine.
But the afternoon escalated to a whole other level entirely, and it happened when her phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Blair? Um, I did something bad. I think you need to come here...”
It was Uriel. At first she was amused that he would even use his cellphone since he complains so much about it, but the tone of his voice and his heavy breathing on the other end made her stomach turn.
“‘Here’?! Can you be a bit more specific please?!” Blair was already out of her seat and jamming her shoes on, hurrying towards the door, ignoring any of her other team members’ concern as they watched her frantic behavior.
“Fuck!—“ Silence for a moment, and Blair moved more urgently. “I’m out by that big oak, the one we carved all of our names into?”
“Yeah, yeah, that one. Okay.” Blair wasn’t quite sure what she was saying. She was tense and panicky as she began running towards the forest behind the cabin. She was afraid what was waiting for her when she finally found him.
“Are... are you still there?...”
Uriel’s voice was faint and whispy, and Blair’s heart shattered. She wheezed as she forced her body to sprint faster, trying to avoid tree roots and rocks.
“Of course, love. I’m not gonna hang up. I’m almost there.” Blair breathed, her legs aching as she hopped over a log.
She could see the trunk of the gigantic oak from here. Blair wheezed in sharply when she saw a small shape curled up on the ground.
“I can see you Uriel, just hang on.”
Not a word in response. A cold stone formed in her stomach.
“U-Uri?”
Nothing.
She ran faster.
Then the whimpering came through the speaker and into her ear. It was faint, and she could barely hear it over her heavy gasping, but it both made her want to cry in relief, because her angel was alive, though it also made her thoughts grow more grim. Soon though, the whimpering grew louder, and transformed into an unholy screech which nearly made her throw her phone as far away from her as possible. The screams not only burst from her cellphone but echoed through the woods, making it an inescapable, bloodcurdling noise.
Blair wasn’t sure if she wanted to see what was causing him such agony. She didn’t know if she could bear much more of this. She shook her head. No. She could do this for him. She would have to.
With a final burst of fierce energy, she slid to her knees by Uriel’s side. She winced as she felt the rough forest floor dig into her skin. The screaming was making her ears ring, and she finally got the nerve to take a look at him.
Blair twisted to the side as quickly as she could and immediately vomited onto the ground beside them. She gagged and wretched as the sour taste of bile took refuge in her throat.
“B-Blair?” A quiet voice asked. It was croaky, probably from screeching so loudly.
“Uriel,” she breathed in sharply, wiping her mouth and immediately shuffling to face him. “Oh God, Uriel, what did you do?!”
“T-There was s-something in the tree... i-it was stuck...”
Blair let out a giggle of hysteria, running a hand through her hair and squeezing it, grounding herself by keeping her attention on the sharp tugging in her scalp.
