"Alexia Teller?"
I turned from the area I had been cleaning to see a man in what looked to be a very expensive suit.
"Yes... and you are?" I asked.
"A friend of a friend," he replied. "Is your cousin around?" I gave a curt nod and motioned for him to follow me.
"Gabi there is a man here looking for you," I told her walking into the room where she laid working on her precious car.
"I'm busy," she told me. I looked at the man awkwardly and shrugged, not sure what to do. Kneeling down he took the cloth from where it laid next to her, making her roll out from under the car a few seconds later.
"You look important," my cousin Gabi said as a man used her cloth making me laugh, "Or at least, your suit does."
"Well, I can get you over the Wall," he stated smugly, "Would you consider that important--Frulein Schmidt?" He walked over to the desk and started messing with stuff.
"A smart mouth to go with the suit," I told him while rolling my eyes at his rude behavior.
"Statements like that can get you into a lot of trouble around here, " Gabi said glumly.
"Or they can get you out of it," the unknown man said while picking up a picture.
"Make yourself comfortable, why don't you," I said walking over to stand by the man.
"Okay, Mr. Important-Suit," Gabi said getting right to the point. "Who are you and what do you want?"
"I'm here to have a chat about your father," the man said, "or uncle in your case Alexia."
We both scoffed answering, "I don't have a father" and "I don't have an uncle" at the same time.
"I don't mean your late foster father or uncle, the mechanic. I mean your real father and uncle," He told us, holding up the picture, "Dr. Udo Teller- Hitler's favorite rocket scientist."
"- That doesn't sound very friendly...," I hesitantly said.
"You're wasting your time," Gabi said getting up from the roller on the ground. "We haven't seen him for 18 years."
"We know this man?" I asked.
"Well, after the war, he came to work for us. He'd been enjoying the American dream.
Had a great job working for the U.S. Nuclear Program......pleasant house in the suburbs...a new Cadillac and a fat little dog called "Schnitzel." he informed us."Wow thanks for acknowledging my question," I said in an annoyed tone.
"Then, two years ago, he disappeared..like steam from a tea kettle," he said pulling a photo out of his pocket showing a man getting out of a car. "That is until now, this was taken last week in Rome."
"Which one is supposed to be my uncle?" I said trying to lighten the mood.
"Funny," he said unamused then turning to talk to Gabi. "I'm told that if your father's knowledge gets into the wrong hands...things could get a little messy. You know, end of the world. That kind of thing." He was looking threw his suitcase and pulled out a small clear device, it looked to be technology of some kind but I could not be sure.
"What makes you think we know where he is?" I asked. "I don't even remember the guy."
"I don't think you do, but I think you both know someone who does." he said dropping the small device into the cup of coffee. "Your mother's brother Ms. Teller, Uncle Rudi."
"My father?" I questioned, "We know him as well as we know Udo, so in other words we don't know him at all."
"Well I've also been told that Udo was never...actually a Nazi." he said walking over to the window. I followed to see two men standing out in front of the building and they didn't look friendly. "He was forced to work for them, unfortunately I can't say the same for your father Alexia. So I'm here to help him- why don't you help me?"
"With what?" Gabi asked.
"If I had 15 minutes, we'd all drink tea, eat biscuits...I'd talk, you lovely ladies would laugh, we'd be on our way. Unfortunately, I don't," he told us gesturing to the window. "So my offer is come with me now...and be at a chic little hotel in West Berlin in less than an hour. Or stay here and spend the night with the Russians....hanging from a pipe, having your toenails removed." Gabi went over to the window and then looked over at me seriously and I knew she was gonna give in.
The man walked over to that wall grabbing the Berlin map off of it. "Ah here we go, that is what I was looking for, do you mind terribly if I borrow your car?" he asked grabbing his stuff.
