I woke up with a sudden jerk, falling off my bed and landing on my butt. Sweat was beading down my forehead and my breath came in short pants.
The door opened and my came in. She furrowed her eye brows saying, "What happened, honey?" Concern flashing in the eyes.
I gave her a weak smile, "Nothing. Just a nightmare," I hope it really was just some kind of freak nightmare. "Oh, and maybe a cracked iPod?" I said wearily, holding up my poor music player that I somehow sat on when I fell. Two jagged cracks ran along the screen. I guess my butt just has a lot of power.
Mom crossed her arms and gave me pointed look. "That's the third one that you cracked," she said disapprovingly.
I held my hands up, "In my defense, they should really make it more durable, and not prone to butt cracking. Get it? Because butt cracks."
She rolled her eyes and said, "You're paying for this one."
I sighed, "I know, I know."
Before leaving, mom turned around and said, "You sure you're okay?"
No I wasn't.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I lied and gave her a weary smile.
"Okay well dinner's ready in thirty minutes. Don't make me wait."
She shut the door behind her as she stepped out of my room, and I waited until I heard her footsteps reach the bottom of the stairs.
I let out a breath that I didn't know I was holding.
The woman with the silver hair, Genevieve, said they were coming. God. I wish everyone would stop saying that.
The inhuman growls the creatures made.
Right before I woke up, I saw them.
Their bright red eyes sucked you in, looking into every corner of your head for one sole reason. To find your weakness, your soft points, your fears. Their black bodies were made up of the very fears and sins you have. The evil the dwells in you.
They were Shadows.
How I knew this, I had no idea. The name just came into my head naturally. I had no idea exactly what they were, but they sure as hell don't look like they went there just for warm hugs and tea.
Something tells me that what I had wasn't just a dream. So either it was real, or I'm just tripping out on some serious LSD.
And something else tells me that it wasn't the latter.
