Chapter 1.  Florean Fortescues Ice Cream Palour.

After living a life of both structure and spontaneity, settling into your own rhythm and routine of life was an odd thing. Apparently, muggles lived by plan, routine and repetition quite comfortably, so it couldn’t be that hard. And so far, it had been going quite well.

It was the summer of 1995, late June, to be precise. I had just finished my very first year of schooling at Hogwarts school of Witch Craft and Wizardry and now, I was enjoying the holiday prior to the next year.. My first year, also happened to be my fifth year of magical education. I had gone to the Beauxbaton Academy in France before Hogwarts .

Often, I took time to reflect on my year. It had been a very intense one to say the least. It had been full of hardships, trials and heart-ache. However, I couldn’t bring myself to regret it. Hadn’t there been good times too? There had been fun, freedom, building relationships and love. Yes, love.

In fact, the year behind me had mostly given me opportunity to make decisions for myself and deal with the results and the consequences that had ensued. And also, things had been out of my hand. Things had taken me by surprise and I had to deal with them too. For one, I had decided to leave the care of my father. The decision had been mine, and so far, the decision had worked out well. I was now living with my god father, Remus Lupin and I worked most days out in Diagon Alley. I enjoyed it immensely. However, if I was honest, there was a whole parade of things out of my control of course. Finding love, and finding it the most peculiar form, happened to be one of them.

There was a grumpy cough from a rounded little witch before me. I jumped in surprise and let her cry for attention pull me back. Right, I was at work and currently, doing quite a pathetic job. I gave my best customer service smile, and took the witches order.

“Nadine! That Owl of yours is back!" My boss Florean Fortescue called out to me from the store room. I felt my smile drop and a bitter scowl quickly replaced it

“Tell that ruddy bird to tear it up and stop sneaking behind my back!" I exclaimed loudly. I shook it off and smiled at the witch as I continued scooping fire pepper and l'amore flavoured ice cream into her honeybrittle cone.

“You don't even know who it’s from!" Came the voice again. I sighed impatiently and handed over the ice creams to the witches.

“Only six sickles for you," I said brightly, compensating for my horrible customer service. Yelling in front of customers isn't exactly employee of the month material, not that Florean seemed to mind. Like most people I had come across in my life, he seemed to find my distress and reactions, amusing. I watched as the three witches hobbled out of the store, the sweet enchanted bell whistled as they left.
