Chapter 4.  Wrapped Around His Finger.

“Snape! Wait!” I called as I followed him out the front door and down the narrow path to the road. To my surprise he slowed, but with an impatient sneer on his face. I hurried up to him and grabbed his arm.

“What?” he snapped, so viciously, I could do nothing but stop and blink. He gave me a cold and hateful glare, than shook me off and began heading away again.

“You promised!” I shouted after him, feeling frustrated and confused. Snape was being cold and indifferent to me and I couldn’t bear it. Obviously I didn’t expect him to make declarations of his love in front of the order and everyone, but it seemed like he didn’t even want to try.

You promised you’d try. I willed.

Snape stopped.

“Here,” I said tossing the golden ring of two entwining snakes that he’d given me last year onto the concrete before him.”Does this mean nothing to you?”

Snape moved slowly and dangerously. He bent over and picked up the ring with a billow of his black robes, stood up and forced it back into my hand.

“Do not anger me Ms Lync,” he said solemnly.

“What have I done?” I said in sorrowful confusion, “What’s changed Snape? Do- do you not feel about me the way I feel about you? The way you felt about me at the end of last term?”

“Nadine!” he scolded, moving me into the shadows, “Now is neither the time nor place to discuss this,’ he hissed.

“Well I’m not going to wait around wondering why you hate me,’ I argued, “You promised me this year  was going to be different, so why are you still so cold? Have you changed your mind? What’s changed? Did you even mean those words when you said them?” I blurted sadly.

“Nadine,” he hushed, “I did mean those words when I promised you them last year. However I thought, with time apart, without you clouding up my senses, I would see you again and I wouldn’t feel as I did. And then if you had tried with the Weasley, as you promised me, you would realize you were better off with him and I wouldn’t have to go through with them.”

I felt my heart drop and tears well in my eyes, “You don’t get to choose how I feel.”

“But are you sure,” he pressed sternly, “Are you sure you still want me?”

“Yes.”

“And you tried with the boy.”

“Yes,” I said sadly, “Believe me, I’ve tried so hard to feel about him the way I do about you.”

“And this is what you want?”

I nodded, “but how do you feel?” I asked, “Are you saying all this for my benefit, or do you want it too?”

“I feel the same,” Snape said plainly, but looking notably unhappy about it, “There is still something in-between us Nadineya, and we need to work it out.”

“So don’t go,” I said plainly. “Stay here with me.”

“Nadine,” he started in his signature bitter, dubious voice, “With half order? Remus, the Weasleys, and that dog,” he sneered, “I hope you didn’t expect for us to go, public,” he finished with a horrible, condescending smirk.

I huffed back and rolled my eyes.  “I only expect you. That’s all I care about.”

Snape frowned, looking again, uncomfortable.

“Please stay,” I started again, “Obviously I’m not expecting you to announce your love for me or anything. Just stay, spend some time with me. Talk to me. Teach me. I’ve missed you. I want to know you again,” I finished softly.
