The sun rises lazily into the sky over the small Irish housing estate of Cloch Rua. The tweeting of birds can be heard all around. Dead leaves of orange and yellow rustle in the October breeze before dancing around the road.
The morning sunrise tints the master bedroom of house number nine. In the corner of the room a black cat stirs lazily in an old armchair. He pads across the room and gracefully leaps onto the heavily blanketed nest that is the bed. He meows at his beloved owner Peggy who is buried under the mass of knitted blankets and patchwork quilts.
Peggy sighs and sits up in the bed. She puts on her big round spectacles and her eyesight is no longer blurred. Her small wrinkled hands stroke the cat lovingly.
"Good morning Lancelot," she says with a smile on her face.
"Meow," he replies.
Lancelot hops down off the bed and makes his way out of the bedroom. Peggy makes her way to her vanity table and looks into the mirror. Her green eyes twinkle with a cheeky secret. She flexes her wrists and cracks her neck.
"Let's have another magical day," she says with a toothy grin. Her long white hair shoots up towards the ceiling before twisting itself into a top knot that is soon secured by a hair tie that floats from a paisley jewelry box on the other side of the room.
Peggy chooses her clothes for the day; a pastel blue frilly blouse, a black maxi skirt, and a heavy forest green hand-knitted cardigan. She takes one last look in the mirror and heads down the stairs towards the kitchen where Lancelot waits patiently for his breakfast.
Peggy tears open a sachet of cat food and pours it into Lancelot's silver food bowl. He scarfs it down without a second thought. Peggy brews her morning herbal tea; this morning's tea is to help with her joint pain. With a flick of her wrist the herbs all assemble from the various window boxes around the house and into the mug. The kettle begins to boil and tips itself over, pouring its contents into the mug.
Granny Peggy has a secret. Granny Peggy is a witch.
