He Called Me Lucy

Run. Run and don't stop. Keep going, don't stop, breath deep and run. He's right there go faster. Run! My brain was screaming at my muscles to go faster but they couldn't. I was drained. I had been going for an hour without a pause. I'm cold and getting worse in my minimal clothes he had me in. Long blonde hair flying in my face, the man behind me wasn't slowing.

"Lucy!" No, no, he's right there run. Suddenly, a tree branch whipped into my face, slicing my cheek. I hissed in pain grasping my skin. I stopped short looking around, glaring my eyes. "Oh Lucy!" His voice was effusive. He needed me back with him. He wanted to be my controller. I heard his heavy movements on the fallen leaves and my heart pounded in my ears. The sky was dark and the moon barely showed through the cascading trees above me. Suddenly to the right of me I saw a reflection of light. The street. I saw a car coming, but it wasn't until my feet were moving and I made a culmination to move again that I realized I was in the middle of the street, sobbing, begging the driver to stop. When the car slowed to a screech in front of me my eyes closed tight, waiting for it to hit me; they didn't. Instead, they unlocked the door. In a panic, I swung the door open and fell in.

"Are you alright sweetie? What happened?" The woman driving began to attack with questions but I wasn't listening. I frantically looked at her,

"Just drive! Please, go!" She obeyed and we sped off. I turned around in my seat, looking at the man that held me captive. He looked back into my eyes, coldly. I sighed deeply. I had been brought up with impiety in my childhood but I hadn't refrained from praying that night.

"Honey? What happened, should I bring you to the hospital?"

"No!" I spat out, "please, I need to see my friends first."

"Are you sure?"

"Please, I need to see my friends." A quiet tear rolled down my face as she gave a look of pity. We continued to drive in silence for 45 minutes while I hugged my knees tight watching the streetlights fly past as we headed into town. I breathed sharply, still unsure if I was safe. "Right here." I croaked when we got to Spencer's house. She was part of our group of 5, but honestly, she and I had always had a filial relationship. My parents weren't part of my life anymore. When the woman parked I quietly thanked her. She didn't want to leave but I made her. When I watched her continue down the street I knew she was gone. It was 2:00 am but the Hastings house was fully lit. There was only 1 car in the driveway and I recognized it to be Spencer's. Her parents were probably in Europe again trying to sell their products. They had constantly been trying to make a name for themselves. When I slowly opened the side door, I saw 8, bloodshot eyes, and my four friends sitting on the couch, with maps and laptops sprawled across the table.

"Alison?" Was that voice Aria, or Emily? I always thought they sounded the same.

"I think so." I rasped." but he called me Lucy." They all looked at me in awe and confusion.

"What do you mean Lucy- I- you're alive?" It was Emily. She came up and hugged me tightly. I stood motionless.

"Can I sit?"

The three remaining girls sat across from me hesitantly, while Spencer grabbed me some clothes from upstairs. When she came back down I changed and lay on the couch leaning into Aria's side, the smallest of the group. "Han, can I have a blanket, I'm still so cold."

"Yeah, of course." She stood up and grabbed me a big, puffy grey blanket.

"What happened to your-"

"He didn't let me wear anything else." I cut her off.

They sat quietly for a few moments.

"Thanks, Spence- for the clothes," I whispered.

"Yeah, no problem. Ali, I'm sorry but what happened? You need to tell us what that monster did."

"Yeah Ali, why did he call you Lucy?" Aria piped in.

"Because I told him to." They looked at me perplexed, but even as my crazy story went on, they all sat understandingly. That's why I loved them so much; none of them ever spoke imperiously. I had assembled the perfect group. "Remember when I went on that run, Em, you wanted to come but I insisted on going by myself for some time alone?"

"Yeah..." She responded confused.

"Well, that's when he jumped from the woods and took me. I dropped my phone and it smashed. I was screaming; but I was so far away, nobody heard me." I began crying, only a little bit though. "When I woke up I didn't know where I was, or what day it was. I didn't know how long I was in there until I asked the woman who saved me what day it was."

"Two months." Said Spencer solemnly.

"Yeah." I looked down.

"I should have come with you." Em regretted.

"You can't blame yourself, if it wasn't me, it would have been some other girl, and they might not have been so lucky. Besides, it wasn't me; it was Lucy.

"Lucy?" Aria inquired.

"When I woke up it was so dark in that barn I couldn't see my own hands but I could hear his horrible breathing and I knew he was there. When we came in that first day and asked me how I was feeling I make a quick decision to make up an alias.

"A What?" Hanna asked.

"An alias. I became someone else, so he couldn't find you. You, as in, you four: my family."

"What did you say to him? Where did you get an idea like that?

"I read about it, in some novel, it might have been Flashman, but I don't remember. It's not that important."

Spencer jumped in from her spot on the stairs. "Alison how-"

"It sounds weird when you say that."

"What?"

"Alison. When you're not someone for a long time you forget how to be them at all.

"We never stopped looking for you."

"I know." I gave them a soft smile. "When he asked me who I was I said, Lucy. I didn't want him to look for you. He asked about my family, and friends, and school, and everything he would need to collect more girls just like me; but I made it all up. I said that I have three brothers. Can you imagine it!" I gave an airy laugh. "I think I would die!" They laughed too and it felt nice. "Then I told him I was homeschooled and was originally from Philly and just moved here, that way he couldn't find anybody I cared for. I told him I was Lucy Darcey. Somebody who doesn't exist. If you Google the name it won't show up."

"How do you know that?" Inquired Emily.

"Oh honey, I always have a plan. I have a list. Don't you ever think I'm gone for good. I'd miss me too much."

"How did you finally get away though?"

I sighed. "That sick son-of-a told me he was going to the town where he found me to collect more girls. Even with an alias, he could have still chosen you four. Even by accident."

They all sat in shock as the realization set in.

"He might have gotten all of us if you weren't so brave," Hanna stated.

"It wasn't me. Han, it was Lucy, she did it all. When I was in that dark place, I wasn't Alison anymore. She didn't exist. That way when I got out it wouldn't be so hard to forget what I went through."

"What did you go through?" Aria said puzzled.

"I don't think I'm ready to go there yet. But I will don't worry." I sucked in a heavy breath.

"And guys, let's keep this alias between us, got it? You never know when I'll need to be her again." They all nodded in agreement as I cuddled further under the duvet.

The end! Comment your thoughts! I had to write this in on class period so it's not as great as it could be but I really don't feel like adding to it or making it longer thus it's a "short story." :)
