My earliest memory is dark

Feeling around

Smelling for the slightest trace

Of home

But there was none

Only dirt

Rotten food

And plastic

Suddenly it was harder to breathe

What was left of the air slowly dissipating

As I gasped desperately

Trying to call for help

Then I felt air

Rush into my lungs

A bright light

And loud voices

Mom! Look!

A noise I could not understand

Honey get out of the trash

Just a bit of warmth

But it's a kitten!

I snuggled deeper

It looks like it's just barely alive...

I was hungry. I tried crying out.

See mom! It's still alive! Can't we at least help it?

I cried again.

Oh... there's a vet right up the street. We can try.
