"Kat! He is here!"

I nearly smudged the red lipstick across my cheek after hearing my mother call out to me.

"I'm almost done! Stall mom!" I shouted back down to her from my bedroom. I turned around to face Ming who was seated on my double sized bed staring back up at me with her eyes all wide eyed. "How do I look?" I asked, placing my hands on my hips. I strutted myself for only my best friend to see.

Besides my mother and my step father, my best friend, Ming was the only one I could ever trust when it came to giving me an honest opinion on how I looked. I hoped that after tonight that would change and I would be able to include my boyfriend in that little circle of mine.

Tonight was a big night for us as it was our one year anniversary. Yes, we had actually lasted a full year! A full senior year to be exact. And now that we had both graduated high school and were both going away to college, everyone was sort of expecting some form of solid commitment from my boyfriend. Ming, especially, had driven it into my head that since Ian was taking me to my favorite diner of all times and had even hired a limo for the occasion, that he was planning something big for me. Ming was convinced he was going to pop the question. Yes, we were merely eighteen, but it wasn't like we were going to rush into marriage. With all this uncertainty of the future, it would be nice to have some type guarantee in life.

I stopped twirling and turned to face Ming. She stared at me from behind her large round framed specks and gave me a genuine smile, approving of the red glittering dress with a flowing skirt and matching pair of heels we had agreed I should wear after hours of raiding my wardrobe.

"Totally going to knock him right off of his feet." Ming said while trying to contain her excitement for me.

I spun back around to have one last look at myself in the mirror. My long copper locks hung so elegantly over my shoulders which seemed to really bring out my blue eyes.

Alright.

I think I was finally ready.

Ming climbed off my bed and stepped up to me, stopping at my side and swinging her one arm around my shoulders so that we both stood there in the mirror able to look at ourselves. The countless amount of bangles and rings on her wrists and fingers lit up the place together with the pink, red and purple tails she had in her long straight black hair, which on more than one occasion, I have been jealous of. I couldn't do half the things I wanted to do with myself like Ming could do with herself and that had nothing to do with our parents. My mother and step father were both environmentalists and quite passionate about saving the earth and all the animals on it, but not excellent at discipline while Ming's parents were traditionalists and very old school when it came to their customs. Yet Ming and I were complete opposites. I was the non-rule breaker while Ming was. Her parents had more than once told me that if it were not for the fact that I obviously wasn't Chinese, they would have sworn that I was their child and that somehow Ming and I had been switched at birth.

"After tonight, I will officially be your maiden of honor." Ming said. "And after this week, we will officially be going off to college as first year students." I said. "Adulthood here we come."

"Don't make me scared by using that word adulthood!" I said before both of us burst out into giggles and laughs.

The door to my bedroom suddenly opened and in came walking my mother dressed in one of her favorite pair of jeans and yellow spaghetti strapped t-shirts and, of course, she was barefoot. My mother's short blonde curls bobbed up and down as she shook her head at the sight of Ming and I who were wasting time here staring at each other and ourselves in the mirror.

We both turned around and gave my mom innocent looks. "Sorry Mrs. J. I won't keep her any longer!"  Ming said before pulling her arm off of me.

I rolled my eyes at Ming before stepping up to my mother and giving her a big hug. "See you later mom. I promise I won't be late home." I said.

"Have fun and be safe my Kat." My mom said, giving me a kiss on the cheek. I pulled away from her and exchanged brief smiles before I made a quick dash out of my bedroom. My heart was racing and my pulse had quickened. I was pretty nervous. Yet as I made my way down the staircase, I refused to show any of it except for absolute poise and control over myself and the way I was currently looking.

He stood there looking all dashing in a black tuxedo which I guessed he had either borrowed from his older brother or possibly even hired it for the occasion as Ian was not really a tuxedo type of guy. Even on our prom night he went for jeans and a gorgeous shade jacket. Ian smiled his broad manly smile up at me as I graciously approached him. His dark brown eyes and glowing blonde hair sparkled in the light from the chandelier which lit up the small entrance hall of my house. It was a chandelier made of all sorts of beach crystals. All environment friendly of course. He stepped up to me the moment I had reached the bottom of the staircase and immediately passed me a yellow rose. Yellow? What an odd color rose to be giving your hopefully future wife? Wasn't a yellow rose a sign of friendship? I refused to take much note of the color to avoid looking ungrateful for receiving such a thoughtful gesture from Ian. He wasn't the most romantic of boyfriends, but when he really wanted to be, he always put a lot of effort into impressing me. Tonight, so far, he was definitely making no exceptions.

"You look absolutely stunning Kat." Ian said before giving me a kiss on my cheek.

"Not too bad yourself my gorgeous boyfriend." I said, returning the kiss. Ian gave a nervous laugh at that before pulling away from me rather hastily. He seemed quite nervous. Maybe even more nervous than what I was feeling right now. I took it up as he was obviously nervous about how this night was going to be turning out.

"Shall we be off?" Ian quickly grabbed hold of the front door's handle and awkwardly opened it in a rather rushed fashion. He was definitely more nervous than what I was.

"Lead the way my prince." I said eagerly, more then ready to get this night started.
