Stiles' digs his fingernails into the podium as his breathing picks up. I focus on his heartbeat and listen to its erratic thumping. If this keeps up, he'll pass out.

I stop listening to his heartbeat and look him over. He's swaying and sweat is collecting on his hairline. I glance at Scott and motion for him to go to Stiles.

"Stiles," Scott whispers as he rises from his chair. He jogs to the podium and wraps an arm around Stiles.

I stand up and follow him, taking Stiles' right arm and helping Scott support his weight.

"I think we need to take him to Deaton's," I whisper to Scott. I notice Scott's eyes flash to Kira before he slowly nods his head. That idiot wants to stay with Kira. Great.

"Can we take him to the nurse?" Scott asks Mr. Yukimura. As soon as Mr. Yukimura says yes, we're out the door.

Stiles shoots forward in a panic, pushing past both of us. I turn to Scott and hold him back.

"Want me to take Stiles?" I ask, pointedly looking back at the classroom and Kira

He sighs, looking over at our fidgeting best friend. "No, it's fine. I got this. Stay behind and take some notes for me?"

"Scott--" I see the way you look at Kira. I reluctantly move out of his way.

Scott nods before walking over to Stiles. He starts asking him questions. I fold my arms over my chest and start to walk towards them when Scott shakes his head at me. I'm ready to protest when I notice the fear on Stiles' face. Scott can handle this. Scott's an alpha

I frown as I walk back into the classroom.

After the bell rings, Kira walks up to me.

"Hi, I'm Kira," her lips twitch into a smile and she holds out her hand.

"I know," I shake her hand. "I'm Bethany McCall."

"You're Scott's sister, right?" She asks, blushing. I fight back a smirk. This is perfect.

"Mmhmmm," I nod, smiling at the new girl.

"Do you know if he's coming back? He left his backpack..." she starts, looking at his empty seat.

"I doubt he's coming back. But if you want to take his backpack, I'll take Stiles' and we can drop them off at my house," I stand up and sling my backpack over my shoulder.

"That would be great!" She pulls both backpacks from behind her back and hands me Stiles'. Was she holding them this whole time? I resist the urge to give her a weird look as I pull Stiles' backpack onto my other shoulder.

"Come on. Let's go, Kira." I lead the way out of the classroom.

♦️

"Is that a coyote?" Kira whispers, peering around the row of lockers.

"Yeah, I think I recognize it..." It's Malia. Malia Tate.

"From where?" She asks, turning around to stare at me. A police report? No. Staring back at me from the forest? No. Crap!

"Uh, the woods... on a morning run," I reply, flexing my hands. She looks suspicious, but quickly drops it.

"Oh, okay." She leans forward and lowers her voice. "How do we...?"

"Get rid of it? I used to help Scott with animals back at the clinic, I could try calming it down."

"What?" Her eyes widen. "You'll get hurt!"

I bite back a laugh. "Relax, Kira. I've dealt with wild animals, before. Just stay back in the corner of this row and keep Scott's backpack in front of you."

She reluctantly nods and does as I said.

I walk out to the main area and find Malia waiting for me. I set Stiles' backpack down behind me.

Her eyes flash blue and she releases a low growl. I flash my yellow eyes back and bare my teeth. She looks ready to bolt when I rise to my full height and flick out my claws. Her blue eyes brighten and she snaps her jaws.

I growl again, but louder this time. I step forward and stare down the coyote. Stand down, Malia.

She drops her head in submission.

I retract my claws and let my eyes go back to normal. I drop into a crouch.

"I'm sorry, Malia, but you shouldn't hurt innocent people." I look back at Stiles' backpack and walk over to it. I pick it up and notice that her eyes follow the backpack. Oh.

"You want this, right? This is what you're after?" Sorry, Stiles. I sigh. "Take it." I set it down and slide it across the floor towards her. She immediately pounces on it.

I turn away before I could watch her tear into my best friend's backpack.

♦️

I head outside as soon as Mr. Tate starts going off about killing his daughter.

The locker room is engulfed in her scent. The rich aroma is a sweet mixture of morning dew after a rainstorm, the forest in the middle of the night, with a hint of rose. It's so alluring that I want to bottle it up and keep it with me.

But I can't. I shake my head and walk to the edge of the forest. I'm ready to run when I hear a low whimper.

I turn to the right and see a coyote with vibrant blue eyes staring right at me. Malia.

"Hi there." I smile, waving at her. She rises from her place on the ground and slowly inches towards me.

She heard the Sheriff and Mr. Tate,  I realize. She heard her dad talk about wanting her dead.

I notice her body trembling. Oh god.

"Want to go on a run?" I ask, jerking my chin at the forest. "It'd take your mind off of things." I smile at her and notice that her eyes light up.

"I'll race you to the Hale house, Malia. It's very spooky and usually abandoned, but it's easy to find." I feel my canines extend and my eyes flash yellow.

"Three." I look over at Malia's blue eyes and feel my heart pick up.

"Two." My stomach constricts and a weird feeling tickles my stomach. Did I eat something bad?

"One." I follow the path I always take to the Hale house. It's the fastest way and--
