Leo and Kate needed a break. Just a breather, just a moment alone, just some time to collect their thoughts.
It had been a crazy, busy day and exciting evening at the 1998 Golden Globe Awards. They were the center of attention, swept up in the current "Titanic" mania. Neither had expected it to be such a monster hit. Now, nearly a month after the theatrical release, the movie was quickly becoming a record-breaking juggernaut. It had made over $150 million at the box office, had been Number 1 every weekend and was still selling out theaters, including late night showings even though Paramount and 20th Century Fox had both added hundreds of more screens to handle the demand.
People simply could not get enough of the heart-wrenching and haunting love story of Jack and Rose. Young girls, little kids, parents, old people, middle aged couples, college hipsters, EVERYONE was falling in love with the movie and many were going back to see it multiple times. And because they loved Jack and Rose, they loved Leo and Kate.
As they strolled up the red carpet earlier in the evening, they looked quite the dashing couple, with Leo looking fresh-faced and comparatively calm in his tuxedo, while Kate was the picture of sexy elegance in a shoulder-less black and white lace number with a matching choker necklace and her hair swept up into an elegant ponytail on top of her head. And Leo could not stop staring at her in the dress.
A couple of times as they strolled up the red carpet, Leo paused to stop and just admire Kate from behind, mostly loving how the dress just barely left anything to the imagination, with it hugging her sexy hips and perfect butt, which he wanted so badly to grab. But he couldn't with hundreds of paparazzi right there. His "Titanic" co-star and movie nemesis but in real life an actually very friendly, funny lady, Frances Fisher, teased Leo and tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Behave yourself Mr. DiCaprio....." His other movie nemesis, Billy Zane, who was actually quite charming and self-effacing, also caught Leo staring at Kate from behind.
"I saw you doing that on the set and I see you doing it now," Billy smirked, teasing Leo. "Can't say I blame you."
"Dude, she's just so fucking gorgeous and stunning tonight," Leo said in all seriousness as Kate talked to a BBC reporter a few feet away.
He was going to have her again, one way or another. They had fooled around on the set down in Mexico a year before, mostly heavy petting and makeout sessions in Leo's trailer. Sometimes there was a blow job, other times some 69 action, getting to about third base, but no home run yet.
Things were getting complicated for Leo and Kate in real life. He had been dumped by his model girlfriend Kristen Zang the previous summer and now Kate was spending a lot of time with some assistant director named Jim Threapleton, whom she had met on the set of her movie "Hideous Kinky," which had recently completed filming in Morocco.
It was very frustrating for Leo. They both were still so young, so idealistic yet already both had been burned by love. Both could sense they were afraid of taking the next step with each other.
But Leo didn't have time to worry about that as the ceremony progressed. It was a funny, cool atmosphere, not stuffy like the Oscars. At one point actress Christine Lahti won Best Actress for her role on "Chicago Hope" and was not in the ballroom, so Robin Williams rushed to the stage to save the day and told a few jokes until Christine Lahti arrived a few moments later to laughter and applause when she announced she had been in the bathroom. Madonna presented Jack Nicholson with his Best Actor award for "As Good As It Gets." And interspersed, "Titanic" collected 4 Golden Globe Awards, including Best Dramatic Picture and Best Theme Song for "My Heart Will Go On," which honestly Leo and Kate were already getting tired of hearing. They joked about it in between commercial breaks. She understood him the way nobody else could and he got her the way nobody else could.
During one commercial break, as he sipped the champagne from his glass, Leo sighed and said to Kate, "Ugh.....just hurry this up and get this over with...." Kate, also sipping her champagne, nodded and said, "Oh my fucking god, no kidding...." Leo nearly spit out the champagne he still had in his mouth as he suppressed a laugh.
"I just love hearing you cuss in your British accent," he smiled, putting down the glass and folded his arms on the table.
"Are you wishing Jim had written more cussing in the screenplay?" Kate asked, smiling.
"No...." Leo turned serious. "I wish he'd written more kissing...."
Kate looked up over her glass to see his blue eyes intensely staring at her, seeming to see through her. She felt her pulse quicken and the room grow warmer.
"Well, we did do a little something about that," she sweetly smiled back at him.
"Yeah, lots of unscripted stuff.......ad libbing......I like that," Leo murmered quietly, touching Kate's thigh. Her dress was tight on her thigh but he could still feel her soft, supple skin underneath. Kate took a deep breath.
"You know......I think there's some time to go out to the limo after the....uh, ceremony. Before all the after parties begin," Leo said suggestively.
Kate nodded and with a serious tone in her voice said "I know.....I know darling."
It took every ounce of his strength and will to not just take her right there. He was that crazy about her, she drove him that nuts, that he would make love to her on a table in a huge ballroom in front of hundreds of people, their co-stars and Hollywood peers. But Leo had to control himself. He and Kate managed to get through the rest of the ceremony and were pulled onstage by James Cameron, the crazy director who had made this all possible, along with the rest of the cast, when "Titanic" won Best Dramatic Movie.
Finally, it was over. Leo and Kate could give into their inhibitions. As the ceremony ended, they were briefly separated. Leo looked around the giant, bustling ballroom. He could not see Kate but the attractive young up and coming actress Angelina Jolie, looking almost as curvy as Kate, made a beeline for him. She had won a Best Supporting Actress award for an HBO movie she had done.
"Hi," she purred seductively at Leo.
"Oh hey Angie....uh, congratulations!" Leo chimed, being as friendly as possible.
"Congratulations to you too. Do you want to um....go talk?" Angelina asked, moving in ever so closer.
Just then Leo spied Kate across the room, where she was chatting with "X-Files" star Gillian Anderson. They made eye contact and waved at one another.
"Oh hey Angie, I gotta go.....my publicist is calling me over....I think they want a quote from me or something," Leo stammered, playing dumb.
Angie pouted out her lips and blinked slowly. She looked around and glanced at a smiling Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston on the other side of the ballroom, laughing and chatting with her "Friends" costars.
"Have your agent call mine...." she said, once again trying to sound seductive. But Leo heard nothing other than the pounding of his heart and rush of blood in his ears as he walked toward Kate, leaving Angelina to swoop in on some other guy.
Nothing and nobody was going to get in the way of him and Kate tonight. NOBODY.
