In the morning we're all quiet and formal. Breakfast is an odd event; we had agreed to eat a lot to give us staying power, but none of us really feel like it. We've gotten into a situation where none of us really knew what to do, and none of us want to take the lead. Liam steps up because he's the mature one, and because he's probably the smartest out of the boys. When we have eaten so much cereal and toast and baked beans that we can't eat a single tic-tac more, we all quickly get our rucksacks on and made our way out of the caravan we had pushed to the side of the road. We all put on our brave faces and walk in the direction we had driven from.
The first hour was fine. We walk is silence, with an unspoken fight not to be the first person to ask for water. Eventually I give in and reach into my backpack and take a small sip of my huge water bottle. Everyone stops in relief and gets their own water bottles, taking small sips, apart from Louis who takes two huge gulps.
We begin walking in silence again until Niall speaks up.
"Why are we so damn quiet? This might not be fun but we should at least try to make it!" I nod at him.
"Okay. Let's play truth, dare, double dare, love, kiss, or torture," Louis says excitedly.
It's funny how they don't realise how much trouble we've gotten ourselves into. I don't want to say anything about it though, however I glance at Ali out of the corner of my eye and I can tell she's thinking the same thing as me. We're thinking that this is the outback: people who get stranded with a limited supply of water and food don't have fun- they die. But we play along anyway.
"Angel: truth dare double dare love kiss or torture?" Louis babbles happily.
"Um... dare."
"Ooh, good choice. I dare you to lick the road."
"What the fuck Louis? That's gross and the road is gonna be super hot." He just giggles and tells me to do it. I roll my eyes but drop to my hands and knees and quickly lick the scalding road. I twinge in pain, my tongue burning.
"Agh, Louis! That hurt!!!" I yell, although I'm kind of laughing. "Okay, my turn. Um, Niall. Truth, dare, double dare, love, kiss, or torture."
"Hmmm... love."
"Okay. How many times have you been in love?" I ask.
"Never," he says confidently. I nod my head, impressed.
"Nice."
"Thanks. Okay, Haz. I choose you," Niall says, turning to Harry.
"Uh, truth."
"Okay... who is cuter out of Ali and Angel?" Niall says cheekily. I blush bright red and Harry gasps.
"Niall! That's very rude! They're both very cute in their own ways."
"Yeah, that's nice and polite, but for real mate. You don't have to tell them. Just tell us lads," Niall begs. Harry rolls his eyes and goes and whispers to Niall. His eyes widen and he whispers to Louis and Liam. I can't hear what they're saying, although I'm praying they're saying my name.
"Nice mate. That'd be cute though," Liam says.
"Anyway, I pick... Liam. Truth, dare, double dare, love, kiss, or torture?" Harry says.
We continue that pointless game for over an hour and realise that I am actually having fun with them and I don't feel awkward or starstruck anymore. I feel like they're my friends and we're not walking along the outback to find wheels to maybe not die.
When it turns about one, we sit down and each have half a tin of tuna and a small cracker. Another sip of our precious water, and we set off again. The next game of truth, dare, double dare, love, kiss, or torture included me giving Louis a piggyback, Liam giving me a shoulder ride, telling everyone about my eighth grade crush, my brief crush on my high school teacher Mrs Jameson, my ex who I cheated on and who cheated on me with the same person, and the time I dated a guy who turned out to be my fourth cousin three times removed. You heard that right.
It also involved a lot of Niall flirting with Ali, but also with me. I don't know what to make of it really, but eh, I'm not going to complain about the fact that Niall Horan is flirting with me.
We sit down to rest for an hour and to eat some supper. There isn't much talking, just me practising my fire making skills (without matches) with Liam, and sketching some things into a tree with a Swiss army knife.
We get up and decide to keep walking during the night when it's cool and to sleep during the early hours of the morning. It feels weird and unnatural walking at 12:40 am in the morning. At 2 am we sit collapse down under a tree and pull out the blankets from Harry's bag. It's then we realise that there are only three big blankets in the bag, not six small ones. We can all fit but we have to share.
"Sorry about this, guys. It's my fault," Harry apologises, but we shake off his apology. "So if we all want to have some cover, two people under each blanket?" As he finishes speaking Louis and Liam are under already asleep under a blanket together, which is adorable.
"Are you guys fine with our positions from last night?" I ask nervously. The rest of them nod so we agree to just do that.
I don't know why being under a blanket seems even more nerve racking than being in a bed with Harry, but for some reason I'm even more nervous.
"Goodnight Ali, night boys," I call out, and get some half hearted replies. I guess everyone is very tired. I get comfortable on the soft sand and Harry puts his arms around me. I snuggle into his chest, feeling butterflies in my stomach, but I'm too tired to be scared now.
"Goodnight, Harry," I whisper.
"Night night, Angel," he replies. I'm hoping for a kiss on the forehead like last night but I don't get one. I guess I let out a little sigh or something because he seems to sense my disappointment, and he laughs a little.
"What, did you want a kiss on the forehead again?" He asks kindly. I laugh as well although I'm glad it's dark or else he'd be able to see me blush furiously. To my surprise, though, he leans forward and kisses me on the cheek this time. A wide smile spreads across my face.
"Thanks," I say.
"Any time," he says, and in a funny way I kind of believe it.
