Our Promise

This is a really short depressing story I wrote while bored in math class. Don't judge me...

----------------------------------------------

There were two kids. Brother and sister, twins to be exact. His name is Nick but he goes by N. His sister is Olivia and she goes by O.

The two never had any friends, only each other. Everyday was the same. They would wake up and sing a song they wrote. They called the song "Our Promise".

(Bold is N. Italics is O. And normal they sing together.)

I'll make you a promise

I'll make you a pact

Because there is no turning back

I'll be with you until the end N

I will never let go O

Because this is our promise

This is our pact

It's just you and me

Against the world

Cause we made a promise

We made a pact

And we are never going to go back

It's just you and me for eternity

So I'll keep our promise

And I'll keep our pact

Just as long as you do

Though it may not seem like much. This song is the key to the children's happiness and sanity. The reason is that their father is abusive and everyone in the town knew. The problem is that their father was the chief of police and their mother a lawyer, and a good one at that. So people kept their distance from the children. The song made them happy because they both knew they would always have each other in life and death. One goes no where without the other.

And this is how their life went. Though things changed on their 13th birthday. They tried to run away. They ran but their parents caught up with them. Their father ran up and grabbed N by the scruff of his neck. His sister sobbed silently nearby. Their father dropped the boy on the ground and kicked him once. He didn't even care that there were witnesses.

They are in the center of town. The twins ran there in hope of protection. People stood and watched in awe. N scrambled up only to be knocked back down by a blow to the face. He got back up and his sister stood there too. They had theirs heads down crying silently. To scared to fight back. He struck O again. But N dared to open his mouth. He never got to speak though. His father shoved him. Hard.

He fell back into the street. He was bleeding and unsure if he could even stand. But, he had to get out of the street. He stood up slowly. His head pounded in his ears, so he can't hear. To dizzy to see and in to much pain to think. So there was no way he could hear everyone's warning. Or his sisters scream.

He only saw the car when it was too late.

He blinked and he couldn't feel anything. His sister hovers above him tears rolling down her cheeks. Many people standing near her. He could hear her screaming.

"OUR PROMISE! YOU PROMISED!" She sobbed. He could feel himself slipping. He looked into her big eyes.

"Don't let him win again," He said softly. "Some promises are meant to be broken." He tried to smile but just grimaced in pain.

O stared at her brother in shock. He wants her to break their promise... She nods slowly. He doesn't smile cause it would hurt him but she can tell by the look in his eyes he is. By his eyes she can also tell he is scared but, somewhat relieved. And here she is.

Her brother is dying and she just has to sit here and watch. There is nothing she can do. Well there is one thing. She opens her mouth and begins to sing.

"We made a promise.

We made a pact

It was supposed to be you and me

Against the world

We broke the promise

We broke the pact

Because we won't let him win again

We broke the promise

We broke the pact

But it is okay

Just remember I love you"

When she looked down at her brother again. His eyes are closed and his cheeks wet with his and her tears. Someone puts an arm around her. The EMTs arrive but, it is already too late.

Now she has no one.

A year later

Her parents were arrested. She was adopted and lives her life as normally as she can with her new family. But she never forgets N. She wears his bracelet next to hers and never takes it off. The one thing of value he owned.

"Olivia!" Christina (Olivia's adoptive older sister) yells. "Get up!" O or as she now goes by Olivia gets up and begins to get dressed. As she does she does what she does every morning. She begins to sing.
