The air outside was warm and the waves pounded against the shore. I thought a storm was coming. My friend and I didn't stop running from the academy until we had waded into the water up to our knees. We glanced back at the academy and noticed that it, too, looked drastically different. The salmon-colored paint had been chipped away in most places and the green roof wasn't actually seafoam green- it was tarnished from acidic rain.

I shivered as the hot air churned and blasted cold against my wet knees, and my friend did the same. We took one look at each other and simultaneously thought: where do we go now? To the right were the dorms, where we had started. We definitely didn't want to go there. The Head Witch would find us.

Straight ahead wouldn't be very clever, and besides- we didn't want to get any closer to the place than absolutely necessary. At the same time, we glanced to the left. There was a small path just large enough for two people to walk side-by-side, and it was completely covered by a canopy of tropical plants. We started in that direction, abandoning the corpses and the academy and our things back in the dorms. Hopefully, we thought, we'd abandoned the Head Witch, too.

The path was warm in the shade, where the breeze couldn't get to us. In some places, the trees and plants had worn away and the path opened just wide enough for a car. About halfway up the path, my friend and I still hadn't exchanged a single word. Then, we heard something. We cocked our heads and faced each other.

"You hear that?" she asked. I nodded in reply. Then I heard revving, like an engine's revving. We turned around, and coming straight for us was a familiar red car. It sped at us, full-speed, knocking plants and flowers out of its way. We screamed and tried to dodge, but its tires squealed just before it reached us and came to a screeching halt.

My friend's mom stuck her head out the window of the driver's side and called us over to her car. My friend's eyes lit up upon seeing her.

"Mom! Mom!" she cried, about to burst into tears. "Thank God you're here!"

"I came to come pick you up from school. You should have called me if you were planning on walking," she said and pulled her head back in the window.

"Hi," she said to me with a calm smile. I acknowledged it and waved back silently.

"Mom, you have to give us a ride to somewhere far away," my friend said, breathing heavily. Her mom thought about it for a second and shook her head.

"Hun, you know that going somewhere far away would cost me a lot in gas money."

"Mom! Our lives are at risk here!" My friend said, and yanked open the car door. She waved me over to the opened door and pulled me inside. "Take us anywhere!"

Finally, my friend's mom nodded. She shifted the car in gear and continued to drive through the tropical brush. No sooner than I buckled my seatbelt did I fall sound asleep beside my friend.

We didn't wake up for quite some time. When we awoke, we did so at the same time. I tilted my head and stretched. The eerie quiet made me look around. The rest of the car was empty. Where had her mom gone?

I pressed my nose to the window.

The car was parked outside a strange place that I didn't recognize. The buildings were small and skinny, apart from massive one that had a bell tower at the top. They were all made of multicolored bricks.

My friend and I exchanged confused glances.

"Mom?" she called as she pulled open her door. She climbed out of the car, and I followed. There was no one in sight. Ultimately deciding we should get help, we abandoned the car and started toward the city.
