The night was cold and the merciless wind blew crystals of the promising winter into the narrow streets of New York City. The bright light of a small theatre flickered through the dark, a homing beacon to all those unlucky enough to venture outside. The smell of grease and burnt popcorn wafted through the doors and out onto the street, soaking into the buildings around it so that the smell never seemed to disappear no matter how much people tried to mask it. Not like there were many people who still resided in the dilapidated buildings covered in neon graffiti. Those who did stay lived with five locks on their doors and guns clutched in their hands at all times. It was a place where questions weren’t asked and mouths were kept sealed.
A side-door slammed, the sound piercing through the silence of the street, and out emerged a lady wearing a massive white fur coat. The coat made it impossible to distinguish many of her features except that she was wearing long gloves that stretched to her elbows made of some red latex material. The fur coat lady stepped daintily around the garbage around her feet and headed out of the alley and down the street. Her appearance raised many eyebrows of the spectators but no one uttered a word as she passed. The lady’s pointed heels clicked on the cracked concrete as she made her way slowly past the bright theatre lights and into the dimly lit end of the street.
“Stop! Give me all your money!” A man had stepped in front of the lady blocking her way to the subway station. He was dressed in a shabby patched coat and was holding a gleaming black pistol pointed straight at her. The lady made a sort of chuckling noise (it was quiet difficult to tell with the coat covering most of her mouth).
“I’m warning you lady, I’ll shoot you straight to hell unless you give me your money.” The man’s voice trembled under the ice blue stare of the white fur coat lady. Obviously he wasn’t that experienced at mugging strange ladies in the street or he would have shot her already. The lady slowly took her red gloved hands and shrugged off the giant white fur.
Screams punctuated the night and then nothing.
