On our way out of the lot, my dad and I spoke about living arrangements, how I would get my own room, eat real food, sleep in a bed; it seemed so surreal, I was finally gonna live a real life again
"Alright, I'm going call your mom and grab your clothes from there"
He pulled out his phone and started dialing, "I don't...have any clothes..." I spoke with a soft voice, it was true though, all my clothes, she burned.
"What do you mean?"
"I sleep and live in a basement...where could I keep my clothes" he turned to me
"...I can't believe this..."
he said before shutting the screen of his phone off and rubbing his temples
"I'm sorry" I shivered
"You shouldn't be apologizing"
he whispered before placing a hand on my head
"Lets go shopping then, hmm?"
I looked at him in awe I had never been shopping before, my mom made people babysit me when she went to go buy a new hand bag or cosmetics "What? Has your mom never taken you shopping before" I shook my head "OK, well I guess we're going shopping!"
As we drove, my dad sang to every song that came on the radio, his favorite being a song by these people called the Chainsmokers, he says they're his favorite group by far"So baby pull me closer
in the backseat of your rover
that I know you can't afford
bite that tattoo on your shoulder"
he sang to his hearts content as I giggled on.
Soon enough we made it to the shopping district it was big, this is a supermarket?! I thought as hopped out of the car "This is a big supermarket" I said staring in wonder, my dad only giggled and said "This is a mall, kid"We walked in through the magic doors that sway open when you step in front of them, they fascinated me so much "Lets stop by a clothing store first. Mmm, How about there?" He pointed to a store with a guy wearing glasses, a striped shirt, red sneakers, and ripped jeans, but his jeans looked cooler than mine, though I don't think that sort of style suited me, I needed something comfortable and flexible, something I could jump around in, So I shook my head no and we continued on, I spotted a cute, small store with lots of sweaters and jeans and shirts with cute characters on them "Can we go there?" I suggested "Hmm? Sure, why not" he said to me softly. As we entered the store, a gust of cool, sweet air hit my face "Mmm! Smells like cake, right?" My father went from isle to isle looking through cute sweaters and nice knits "Oh, Alen I've been wanting to ask you something" he said popping his head out of a clothing rack "Y-Yes?" I stuttered "Where's the jacket I gave you when I....left" The day my dad left was the saddest yet most memorable day in my life, before he left and gave a big jacket with his name and my name on it, on the front was a number, that number was the last two digits of the year I was born, but now it's gone "she burned it..." I scoffed trying to act strong because I was so tired of crying, but, I have nothing more to cry about I'm finally able to live a life "Oh...well, I'll make a new o-"
"No, that jacket was one of a kind and it can't be replaced so don't worry about" I said with a wavering voice, that jacket meant so much to me and it's gone, the only link I had to my father, it had still smelled like him after a month of his absence. I loved it, I spoke to it as if it were him, and snuggled into it at night
"I'm sorry, Alen...really"
"It's ok dad"
He looked down into the clothing rack, silently. I know how much he loved that jacket too, it was our little charm, and I can tell it meant way more to him now that it's gone
