Being a witch in a town where witchcraft is persecuted is a very dangerous thing. I didn't choose this life, though, I hadn't even known what I was or who I was supposed to become. One things for sure, I hadn't expected this....
~October 27-Huntersburg, New York~
"Why do the stores keep selling these if we're not allowed to wear them?" My friend, Corinthia, asked me, holding up a costume bag with the title 'Witch'. We'd been looking through costume shops around the town, searching for a good costume for the party on Halloween. Every year the party was thrown by this rich family and this year we had happened to be invited. "How would I know? I don't even know why we're not allowed to wear them in the first place", I said as I walked down the isle. I passed costumes for clowns, zombies, and various superheroes. I groaned at the lack of costume choices.
"What do you think they'd do if we did wear witch costumes?" Another one of my friends, Shay, said, holding up a witch costume on a hanger. It was a black cloak-like outfit with golden designs outlining the polyester robe. "Burn us at the stake?" Corinthia suggested, taking one of the other costumes off the rack, this one red lining instead of gold. Orion, another best friend, said "I'd take that chance. these witch costumes are hot!" I smiled, picking up a purple cloak with silver and gold lining the edges. I had to admit, I was dying to try the costume on. Orion picked up a blue-lined cloak and we walked over to the dressing rooms. We were going to get in so much trouble but it would be soooo worth it.
~October 31~
I stood still, trying not to get burned by the curling iron Shay wielded. I could feel the heat that radiated off of it on the back of my neck as my long-but-short brown hair was wrapped into a perfect curl. I was the last doing my hair, the others were getting their costumes on and decorating with magical-looking jewelry. When the last curl was finished, Shay put the iron down and I walked over to my closet.
I had the biggest room in my house, it was supposed to be the master but my parents let me have it when I was 7. The walls were painted a nightime blue and the floor had a carpet that was so old no one knew how it even got there. My closet was pretty big too but I had gotten taller than it had so I had to lean down to go into it. I grabbed the costume I had tried on at the store, I had bought it as soon as I saw it on myself.
I got it on, staring at my self in the mirror. I had never thought of myself as attractive, even a little bit but, looking at myself now, I looked like I was ready to take on the world. Slipping on various rings, necklaces, and bracelets, I walked downstairs to my friends in the kitchen, them having already put on their costumes. I smiled as I saw all of them in their costumes. We looked badass.
"Ready to go?" Orion said, picking up a piece of candy and placing it in her mouth. "Hell yeah, let's go party then get arrested for wearing these amazing costumes!" I said, walking out the door with my witchy friends following me.
~112 Hunter Avenue- 8:50 PM -Hunter Mansion~
We approached the huge mansion that belonged to the Hunter family, the knot in my stomach growing larger. Not only were the Hunters the founders of our town, but their children were the most popular. I chuckled at how the one year we had actually been invited to the best party of the year was the one where we would probably make the biggest spectacle the town had ever seen, besides and adjacent to the witch trials.
No one actually knew what would happen if you 'impersonated' (as the rule called it) a witch on Halloween and I had a feeling we were about to find out.......
