TW: CHILD ABUSE

"finn, what's the answer to number 4?" my teacher asked me. i wasn't paying attention at all, and i probably should've, history is my worst subject.
"uhm, 3?" i guessed, other people started snickering. "dude, this is history, not math." i heard noah say, since he sits only 2 seats behind me. i rolled my eyes.
"mr. wolfhard, the answer is not 3, pay attention next time. and get off your phone." she scolded. i was on my phone the whole time. i was texting auburn.
i put my phone back in my pocket, and caleb was looking at me like he was disappointed in me. the bell rang. we all left the class, noah however, wanted to make it clear that he was trying to annoy me.
"hi finnie boy, while your grades drop in school, i'm off to my honors classes." "you know what you lack?" "what?" he turned to face me. "a decent girlfriend."
"fuck you wolfhard, you don't even have a girlfriend." "actually he does, come on dude." caleb interjected, pulling me aside.
"you can't afford to get in trouble and fight right now." he reminded me, walking down the hall. "am i a fuck up, caleb?" "what?" he seemed genuinely confused.
"because, my life is falling apart, man. my brother and his girlfriend, my parents divorcing, my grades dropping, i'm losing sleep-" "but think of the positives dude, auburn."
"she's great and all, but, right now, i kinda wanna sort out my life." "okay finn, your life isn't a mess compared to other people's. don't let the teenage angst fuck with your head. auburn likes you bro, we can all tell." he said.
"dude, i kissed her. at sophia's house, i kissed her, and we've been texting non stop." "and? that's a good thing." "it is, but, i don't know." "god, men are so confusing." he said mocking girls.
"shut up, i do like her, but-" "but, you kissed her, if you cut it off now, you would be leading her on, don't be a dick." "you know what? i'll go visit her at her place tonight." "don't get too freaky, i can't be the god father of no kids." "caleb!" he started laughing.
after school ended, i texted auburn letting her know i was driving to her house. she never responded, so instead of going over there, i waited in the parking lot. after about 20 minutes, still no response. her school gets out the same time as mine. i drove over by her house anyways.
i decided to park in the road. i slowly walked up to her door, and i heard glass break, like somebody was fighting. i looked through the front window, and there was fighting. auburn and her dad.
from what i could hear, he was yelling at her about seeing our friends last weekend. i was debating whether or not to go in to go and stop it. was this a normal thing? did this always happen? i had a lot of questions.
i opened the front door, and he quickly turned around to look at me. "what the fuck are YOU doing here?!" he recognized me from last weekend, i guess. "you were-" before i finished my sentence, he bucked at me, "boy i can take you out right now!"
"finn, just go home, he's just angry right now, that's all!" auburn yelled from the back of the room. "he's stressed from work!" she made up an excuse. "i don't care." i stated. it wasn't an excuse to be an asshole.
he continued to inch closer to me, "you have 3 seconds to leave my house." "leave auburn alone." "she's my daughter, don't tell me what to do!" he yelled, then punched me. i fell back to the ground, he put A LOT of force into it. he was TRYING to hurt me.
auburn launched over to me, "dad what the fuck?! he did nothing to you!" she screamed. i covered the cheek he punched. "come with me." i calmly said to her.
"you two are NOT going anywhere!" he yelled. he won't quit yelling, does he have an inside voice at all? she gathered me up, and we walked outside. her father following us.
"don't get near his car!" she yelled. "i'll fucking crash his car if i want!" the neighbors could hear, and they started coming outside. she looked like she was gonna have a panic attack. "uhm, sir, you're scaring her, really bad." i said as calmly as i could. i really wanted to drop kick him though.
he came near her, "no, fuck you." she spat. "you are not gonna talk to me that way!" he said grabbing her wrists, she got out of the grip, and got into the passengers side of my car.
i hurried to the drivers side, and turned my car on, "anywhere you wanna go?" "just hurry and drive." she said quickly. i rushed off down the street, and in my rear view mirror, he began to get in his car, and follow us.
i sped up a little more, and took sharp turns to lose him. i was hoping he'd lose us or that he'd get a ticket or something. he got on the highway, and i couldn't see him, so i figured we lost him. i've never been in a car chase with anyone, so this made my stress and anxiety spike.
i looked over at auburn, "are you okay?" "do i look okay to you?" i looked back at the road. i ignored the comment, "maybe we'll just go to my place." i made a circle so i could get back to my place.
she's never been to my house, cause I hate being there. i pulled up to it, and she quickly got out of my car. "okay, slow down." i opened up the garage door, and entered my house that way.
my dad was home. my mom wasn't. they were legally separated, going through a divorce. i wasn't part of the custody battle, im 18. "my room is in the back, the last room over there." i motioned down the hallway. she practically ran to my room.
those fights had to have happened before, or happen often. "who's the girl?" my dad asked. "no one, a friend, i picked her up from school." i lied. "leave your door open, i don't trust you after last ti-" "okay!" i cut him off, so he wouldn't finish that sentence. i walked back to my room, leaving the door cracked, it looked closed, but wasn't.
she was sitting on my bed. she was pretending like nothing happened. "i like the poster." she pointed to my poster i have, it's a band poster. she looked around. "the famous cherry red guitar, not in the back of your car." "that rhymed." i chuckled.
"that would be a great song lyric." i said out loud. she grabbed her phone, and made a melody, "that famous cherry red guitar, sitting in the back of his car." she sang, just barely enough so i could hear her. i finished with another rhyme, "he played all fucking night, til we all saw the sunlight." i lightly strummed the guitar.
i was practically putting together the chorus of a song. "it actually sounds good." i complimented her, for basically giving me the idea. she had a good voice, i never really had heard her sing before so it was new.
she grew quiet. "hey, uhm, finn, we still need to talk." "about what?" "i need a place to sleep, it's wednesday." "you can see if sophia will let you." i suggested, and she looked a little down from that response. "finn, remember when we were at sophia's and we were both outside, and you kissed me? why did you?"
"i uhm, i like you, i thought i made it pretty obvious." the way i said it was pretty douchey, and i didn't really mean to say it that way. she looked at me, "i like you too, took you long enough to admit it though." she joked.
she scooted closer to me and gave me a hug. i saw trauma bruises on her back, like she had been punched. i didn't say anything though, i didn't really wanna bring it up, especially after today. "IT'S REALLY QUIET IN THERE, THERE BETTER NOT BE ANY FUNNY BUSINESS GOING ON!" i heard my dad yell from another room.
