It's what you would imagine the end of the world to be like; Only ten times worse. The predictions couldn't have saved us, only made the truth more unbearable and that's we were all going to die...Or turn into one of THEM.
I spent the last day with Jax. We were hanging outside of the towns movie theater when the first shots fired. The radio was off while the public service announcement made it's drill, only this time there was no drill. He fumbled with the keys and cursed under his breath. Jax had been my friend since freshman year in Biology. He was always calm, and always knew what to do. Except this time he didn't have any ideas only rambling with possibilities. Our town was small with the theater being one of the biggest attractions on a Friday night. We held 756 people in this southern town of Wabash and I'm guessing half of them were already done for since half the town didn't believe the rumors. "Claire." Jax said turning the ignition and creeping forward. "We gotta get out of town, before dark. I think we'll be alot safer on the roads." He had a point, but although he had a ton of good qualities that slicked back hair and this driving off was not one of them.
"Do we have enough gas? You're Jeep isn't going to get us far with plastic windows. What about food? Folks are probably running through supermarkets already." Jax stopped and slammed down on the wheel. "There's one." He whispered and pointed across the parking lot towards a man dripping in blood staring straight at us. "Drive!" I panicked throwing my hands for the wheel and Jax just sat there watching. "I wonder." He said unlocking the drivers side and taking a cautious step out of the car. "Wait! Are you crazy?!" I was trying to pull him in, I really did. But it was like i didnt faze him. It was like i wasnt there.
"Claire, I always knew that i would die someday..."
"But that days not today! Come on Jax this isn't funny! It's going to kill you." He ignored my pleas and walked into it's path, smiling.
"Hey there." He said, as if talking to a friend on the football team or ordering a meal.
And that was the last time i saw Jax, laying and choking on his own blood while that thing sucked him dry. "I'm so sorry." I whispered to him, hoping that for that last moment in his life he knew someone was with him, and someone loved him. And i wasn't going into he took his last breath.
