the next day

Mikayla walked into school, keeping her head down, avoiding eye contact with people as she carried on her day. After her breakup with Jessie the entire school has left her as she had been before: a quiet nerd. Walking into the lunch room, running a hand through her messy blonde hair she carried a brown paper bag and a water bottle. She stopped once she was inside. Looking around, she had no where to sit. Gnawing her lip, she started walking towards a lonely table, getting ready to eat by herself.
"Mikayla! Over here!" She turned around, eyeing the sea of people before coming to a stop when she met the eyes of none other than Daniel Seavey. She smiled, making her way to the table, avoiding the strange glances she encountered from the other tables. Daniel and his friends were known to be third class popular: the people who were good with others, making friends easily, they were somewhat respected by the populars. For a third class popular to even interact, or in this case, sit with a non-popular, it would lower their rank in the imaginary Popularity Hierarchy that everyone knew about.
A smile played on Daniel's lips as he put his hand down, watching her walk with a slight bounce to her step to their table. Jack and Jonah looking strangely at Daniel: who was this girl? Did Daniel get a girlfriend without telling them? Corbyn and Zach poked and prodded Daniel, smirking and teasing him.
"Does Dani have a crush?"
"A girlfriend?"
"Bro you never told us."
"Is this where you were yesterday?"
Daniel remained unfazed, as if he couldn't hear them.  Mikayla sat down, sitting between Daniel and Zach.  She smiled nodding her heads at the boys looking at her.  Mikayla took out a sandwich, her cheeks starting to glow a faint pink color, feeling the boy's eyes on her.  Daniel nudged her, popping a grape into his mouth.
"This is Corbyn, Jonah, Jack, and Zach." He said going in a circle, pointing to each one as they smiled or waved at her.
"I'm Mikayla."  She sat there in awkward silence, unsure of what to say.  The boys started chatting about grades and previous test scores.
"He literally looked at my paper, copied it.  And the teacher says I copy! I got a C just because of that."  Jack threw his hands in the air, slamming them back down onto the table.  Mikayla sat looking at the table as she ate her food quietly.
     "Same guy as last time?"
"Yeah that jerk Jessie."  Mikayla's head bolted upwards, hearing the name snapped her out of her thoughts.  Jack looked at her, relaxing her old connection with him.
     "Oh-um-sorry.  I didn't mean-I mean I didn't know you- I forgot-"
"No please go on about Jerk Jessie.  I can share some personal embarrassing anecdotes myself."  And just like that they began a conversation.  They ranted for the majority of the short lunch period.  Mikayla spilled silly mistakes he made, attemtping to make a smooth entrance with fancy music as he gracefully made his way down the stairs before falling down the rest. The boys all shared some of their other embarrassing stories, like that time Christina, Corbyn's girlfriend, and him lost their car keys in a wheat field at night.
The corners of Mikayla's mouth were high, her jaw hurting from laughing so much. She clapped her hands, slamming the table as she attempted to catch her breath. They played childish games like spin the bottle except with their future.
"Who's most likely to get married first." Jonah smiled before spinning his water bottle circularly. The bottle twirled before coming to a complete stop, the tip landing on Corbyn.
"Looks like I have to buy a wedding ring." Corbyn smiled, glancing behind him at Christina who was joking with her friends.
By the time lunch had ended Mikayla's cheeks hurt and half of her lunch was still in the paper bag. She carried the remains to her locker, playfully joking with Daniel.  A smile played on his lips, exposing his small tooth gap.  Sometimes people would make fun of it in the younger grades, calling it immature or irregular.  However, Mikayla loved it.  She always protected him as they were younger.  They had that special mutual friendship protecting each other.
"Hey! Seavey! Spongebob called, he wants his teeth back." An boy, older than us spat at him.  We were in class but he boy had been held back so many times he was in the same grade as us.  Looking at his more matured looking face, he was at least 3 years older.  Daniel was writing down notes from the SmartBoard, ignoring the bully as he teacher was out of the room on a phone call from the office.
"Hey Tooth Gap! Go back to kindergarten where you belong."
"You're so quiet? Why? Your mommy not here to protect you."  The boy kept yelling comments.  I looked to my side, putting my pencil down.  Daniel stood hovered over his work, still scribbling down notes.  A small tear made his way down his cheek.  A few other tears were collecting at the base of his jaw.  Something about that switched me.  The sight of this sweet, loving boy crying because of some bully was enough to make Mikayla do what she did.  She stood up quickly, causing her chair and desk to move away from her as she turned around, fire ablaze in her once soft eyes.
"How about you pick on someone your own size? Oh, that's right, you CAN'T because you got held back so many times.  Stay away from my friend and leave him alone."  She screeched, each word pushing her to take another step closer to the boy.  He looked taken aback at first, before recovering and hiding his fear with a smirk.
"Who are you his mom?" He snickered.  No one in the class laughed.  They all looked at me, waiting for some reaction.  Oh they got a reaction all right.  I raised my hand, balling it into a fist before swinging it as hard as I could, hitting him square in the jaw.  He yelled out in pain, clutching his chin as a little blood was starting to come out.  The teacher ran in.  I had gotten detention.  However, as I was walking outside to get this detention I spotted Daniel, looking up at me in awe and love.  I would do anything for this boy.
As Daniel and Mikayla were speaking a strong force sent Mikayla backwards, causing her back to slam into the wall behind her.  She groaned, looking upwards.  A boy had been shoved into her.  After looking at him curl into a ball she could tell he was in a fight.  His hair matted down by sweat, his eye throbbing, his cheeks swollen and pink.  There was a small trail of blood going down his lip, dripping off his jon and onto the floor.  Mikayla sat up, trying to find the person who caused this.  She locked eye contact with the one person she was hoping to avoid for the rest of her life: Jessie.
