Why?

Anna paced across her bedroom floor. She hoped if she hoped that if she paced long enough then maybe she would magically come to a decision.
"Troy"... "Conner"... she muttered softly to herself. Recently her social life had really taken off and that was good, mostly. She never had to be alone if she didn't want to be. This was a good thing, mostly. But she couldn't help but feel that if she were not popular she would not have this dilemma now. She had to choose between two great guys, both who she thought she could easily love.
There was Troy. He was a kind and caring guy with the sweetest smile. That side of him was a secret. She was one of the few privileged enough to see this side of Troy. To everyone else Troy was the "bad boy" of the school and he drove all the girls crazy with longing.
Then there was Conner. He was not what you would call popular by the traditional way people think of popularity but he was well liked throughout the school. He had the kind of delicate beauty but at the same time had just the right amount of masculinity to his features. He was a valedictorian in the making. He was into everything all with a level of skill that few really are capable of achieving. He was envied in everything he did. To top it all off he was kind to people in his own way, though it usually was done in a way to make it awkward. His interactions with others were always slightly off which is the only reason he didn't have the traditional type of popularity.
Anna knew she had feelings for both boys, but as to whether it was friendship she felt or romantic interest she was not sure. Now she had to decide which way it was and for whom each feeling belonged to and if both were stirring romantic feelings in her then which one she wanted as hers.
Knock knock knock.
"Anna are you in there?" "Can I come in?"
Coming out of her thoughts Anna replied "yes mom, I'm here, come on in."
Anna's mother was a tall woman. She was currently working as a model. She looked not a day over 25 despite the fact that she was already 42. There is always the cliche in commercials where the mother is mistaken for an older sister. This was an everyday occurrence for Anna. It was a source of both pride and embarrassment for Anna. She was embarrassed when people believed that she was lying about not being sisters and greatly proud when they finally admitted that she was telling the truth. Her mother had silky blond hair and beautiful blue eyes. She was one of the few people in the world that was naturally as skinny and tall as the rest of the models she works with. However unlike the rest of the models she has a C-cup. Her mom has been a model since she was 18 years old. Both then and now she is on covers of magazines and is on the list of top models. For the two of them money has never been an issue.
Anna's mom came in and flopped down on Anna's bed. "Want to go to a movie today, I've really been wanting to see that one with the child genius."
Anna thought for a minute and decided that maybe a distraction was just what she needed. "Sure let's go."
All along the way to the movie theatre and during the movie Anna relived all the fight training her mom and various other trainers had taught her. She had understood from a young age why her mom would need to be able to fight not just defend herself. But she never understood why she needed to know. Growing up her mom had mostly let Anna have her way. But despite Anna's great protestation she had still made her learn for 3 years how to fight. Thinking on this Anna realized that she still did not understand although it had been a year since she had completed everything that they had to teach her. She whispered to herself "who do I need to protect myself from?"
