The Red Oni That Cried

This is based on a Japanese tale with the exact same title.

I read it in a library and it just made me want to write it in Narry. I think I wrote it about two years ago and forgot about it. So here it is!

Please note that in the real book, they were merely friends. And before I forget: an oni is a Japanese ogre.

A Red Oni named Harry lives in a mountain. He wants to befriend the humans that lived there-- a lot. So, he gets out a pen and writes on a piece of cardboard: I am a very kind oni. Anyone is welcome. There are yummy snacks and hot green tea is boiling and ready. He hangs it in front of his house and waits for visitors.

However, the humans are suspicious, and not even one person dares to step into the house. At first, Harry is sad; then he is frustrated at how no one trusts him; and then he throws a tantrum and rips the cardboard into shreds.

As Harry sits down weakly and stares into space, his boyfriend Niall, the Blue Oni, visits his house at the same time as always. As soon as he enters Harry's house, he is surprised at how gloomy he is.

"What's wrong? You okay?" Niall looks down worriedly.

"It's anything but fine, Niall," Harry sighs as he tells him what happened.

"Hmm..." Niall thinks. "I have an idea; why don't I go to the town and cause a racket, and you go save the day? Then the humans would know that you really are a kind oni."

"That's a reckless idea. I mean, what will you do after?" Harry protests.

"Don't worry, I can fend for myself," Niall smiles. "Now, let's go!" Niall grabs Harry's hand and drags him out the door.

The plan is taken to action.

Niall attacks the town's kids while they are playing. Then, Harry comes and protects the kids from getting any harm.

"A puny oni like you could never defeat me!" Niall screams.

"I will never let you hurt the kids! Now leave us in peace!" Harry roars back.

Niall growls, "I will come back. Then you shall be defeated!" Then he runs away deep in the mountains.

"The blue one.... The blue oni's gone," one woman gasps.

"And the red one protected us..." a man says, gaping.

Silence.

Then, a child screams, "Hooray to the red oni! Boo to the blue oni!"

More and more people take on the chant, and soon the whole town is screaming its joy for Harry.

Harry is happy as he could ever be. Now that he'd "saved" the town, all the people in the town trust him, and every day someone comes to his house to drink tea or play.

However, Harry was worried about one thing: his boyfriend Niall hasn't visited-- not even once. The reason the people are so kind to me is because of Niall, he thinks. I should visit his house and tell him what's going on.

As soon as Harry arrives at Niall's house, he pulls on the door to enter, since it is always unlocked. But for some reason, the door doesn't budge. Harry looks around and finds a piece of paper with Niall's handwriting.

Dear Harry,

Please be nice to the humans and have fun with them. If I continue spending time with you, they might think you are a bad oni as well. So, I've decided to go on a long trip- but I promise to never forget you.

Please take care.

You are the best thing that happened in my life, and I will love you forever and ever.

Harry reads the letter over and over again. Tears start running down his cheeks, but he doesn't try to stop them.

Harry was never able to meet Niall again.
