"Please don't leave me" was mumbled through tears streaming down her face. She gazed over his lifeless body in shock. Barley breathing with broken bones and open wombs, Sitting close to the edge of her seat, she held his hand just waiting for him to open his eyes and see that she was there, as she always was, as she only knew to be.
The nurse came in and checked his vitals. Anything different, anything? She was just waiting and waiting for the nurse to say something good.
"How long has he been like this" she asked the nurse.
"When he came in here he was pretty bad, he looks a lot better actually." Said the nurse
"But has he always been in a comma? Will he come out of it?"
He did come out of his comma once about a few days ago. So there is hope." Said the nurse and then she left the room."You can't leave me like this, it can't end like this." She spoke out loud.
She meant to say her goodbye a long time ago but never really found the courage to call him up and say it. The scene was played out in her head many times and this wasn't how she pictured it. This was permanent. If she would have known that a year ago was the last time she was going to see him, she would have said something more.
All she could do was sit there in his hospital room and wait, and remember. She thought back to the day they first met. Wow he was larger than life and now he's losing the battle.
The door to his hospital room opened up slowly, "is it you?" said an older woman.
Slightly startled "Samantha... an old friend", she replied nervously as if she shouldn't have been there.
"Sam? Sam!," The older woman said with hope and an understanding of who she was.
"Yes," Sam quickly placed the old woman in her head, "We have met before." Sam asked. She'd only met his parents once before and knew she'd never remember her in a thousand years.
"Sam" The older woman went on to explain, "Last week when he woke up from his comma, the only thing he asked for was someone by the name of Sam. By the way you were looking at him, I knew it was you."
Why would he ask for me? She thought to herself. She hadn't seen him in over a year. She was only there because a mutual friend called with the horrible news about the accident and she couldn't help herself but come to his side.
"Sara called me", she explained, "She told me about the accident and somehow my car just drove myself over here." With a kiss to his hand, she stood up and gave a half hug to his mother with a whisper, "I'll pray for him and for you. I'm sorry, but I can't be here" and then she was gone.
