Chapter 1

I took my spot behind the register at Launa's Books, a small bookstore in a small community in LA. The store was never busy, but it managed to stay in business. I checked my watch, knowing my sister would be here any moment. The only TV in the store had FOX news on mute.

I sat down on the bar stool that was behind the counter, shoving my Under Armor drawstring bag on the shelf. I noticed a slip of paper stating that book shipments would be in tomorrow. We only had one book shipment every season unless new books came out, then we would get a small amount of them.

"Hello Jackie," my boss, Heather said. "I will be stepping out today due to a meeting that I have to attend. I expect you to take care of the store today and tomorrow, seeing as the meeting is in Sacramento. The book shipment will have arrived by the time you get here. I suppose you will handle that. Now, I shall be off."

Heather left the store. Not more than two minutes later, Casey, my twin sister came in. Casey is two minutes younger than me. She has long, wavy, blonde hair. Her eyes are blue, unless she's sad, then they turn green. Casey is half an inch shorter than me at five four and a half feet tall. She has perfect teeth and doesn't wear glasses. I, on the other hand, used to wear glasses, but recently changed to contacts. I have long, straight, brown hair and gray eyes that turn blue in the sunlight. I'm tall, five foot five, and skinny. I have a natural glow to my tan skin.

"Hey, Heather has that meeting in Sacramento and is going to be gone for a few days. I'm in charge and we have to take care of the book shipment tomorrow. There's a few books in the last few isles that need to be reorganized alphabetically," I said, noticing Casey roll her eyes.

The bell on the door rang, signaling a customer. I looked up and to my surprise, there wasn't just one customer, but five gorgeous guys, standing in front of the door with sunlight glistening off of their hair. I recognized the guys immediately. They were One Direction. I decided to play it cool.

"May I help you," I asked cautiously.

"Hello there," Liam Payne said, trying to play it cool.

"Hi," I said, feeling a blush coming on.

"I'm Liam. And this is Zayn," Liam introduced.

"I know. My sister and I are fans. So, what brings you to this side of town? Not that it's bad, just that not many people come here. Especially celebrities," I said in a rush.

"Niall, Harry, and Louis wanted something to read. So, we came here," Zayn said.

"We wanted to look for books. Is there anyone that can help us," Niall Horan asked, gesturing to Harry and Louis.

"Um...Yeah. My sister, Casey should be at one of the back shelves organizing the books. I'm sure she wouldn't mind," I said, feeling like an idiot for ignoring them. They headed to the back, while Liam and Zayn stayed at the front counter with me.

"I like your shirt," Liam said, eyeing me closely.

"Thanks," I said. I had on a short blue jean skirt with fake holes in it, and a low cut, purple Aeropostale shirt on. I had my Gir, from Invader Zim lanyard, that held my car keys and store keys. I had on zebra striped knee socks and my solid black high-top Converse.

I walked out from behind the counter with a few books in hand.

"So, do you like to read," Zayn asked.

"Yeah. That's the whole reason my mom made me get this job. I started reading a lot more after my dad died to escape from this world and it helped a lot. I also needed a job to pay for my car," I said, gesturing towards the parking lot outside. My midnight blue, 2012, GT, Ford Mustang was sitting just outside to the left of the door.

"Nice car. And I'm sorry about your dad. Sounds like you were close to him," Liam said, following me to the back storeroom.

"Yeah. I got along better with my dad than I did with my mom. But now I'm closer to my mom. She really changed after my dad passed away. She used to be strict and a fuddy-duddy, but now she's happy and energetic. It's like she's a different person," I said, my voice almost a whisper.

"Do you need any help," Liam asked. I was trying to climb up the ladder in the storeroom to put up some books that hadn't been selling.

"Um...Yeah. If you could just hold these while I climb the lad-" I tried saying before I fell backwards off the fifth rung of the ladder. Zayn caught the books while Liam caught me.

"Be careful," Zayn said.

"I'm sorry. I'm a total clutz. Just ask my sister. I run into things all the time, trip over flat surfaces, and fall a lot. Just the other day I knocked one of the shelves over by falling into it," I said laughing at the thought of it.

We walked back out to the front of the store. Harry, Niall, and Louis were ready to check out. I had to do it since Casey doesn't have the register keys.

"You know what, I'll pay for," I said, trying to be nice.

"Don't give us special treatment because we're famous," Niall said.

"I'm doing it as a favor," I said, winking at Liam and Zayn.

"Okay," Harry said.

"We're coming back tomorrow. Casey told us about the book shipment," Louis said.

"See ya then," I said.

Everyone but Liam walked out of the store, even Casey.

"I didn't catch your name," Liam said. I looked into his chocolate brown eyes and noticed, for the first time, how handsome he really was. Liam had shaggy, light brown hair that suited him perfectly. He was tall, about five foot ten in height. Liam was skinny, but a tad bit muscular. He had a birth mark on his neck.

"I'm Jackie Nicole Kingsley," I said. "Here's my number." I said. I turned around and scribbled my cell number on a post-it note.

"I'll text you later," Liam said. He walked out of the door smiling.

"What are you so happy about," Casey asked when she came back inside.

"I think I'm in love," I said. I felt a smile plastered on my face that probably wouldn't go away until later that night.

"With who? Liam? Zayn?" Casey asked.

"Liam," I said. I noticed it was time to go.

"Get your stuff and get in the car while I lock up," I said.

When we got home, our mom was waiting for us in the kitchen.

"How was school?" my mom said. She was tall and slender with brown, curly hair and bright green eyes. Mom had on a small, black, form-fitting, strapless dress. My guess was that she was about to go to a party that members of her office hosted.

"Now Jackie, you're both old enough to take care of yourselves. I am going to New York for a business trip and will be gone for at least two months. I've left some money for gas, food, and to pay the bills. If you two need anything, please call me. If you want to have any parties, all I ask is that you clean up the house afterwards. I love you both." mom finished. She was always easy-going on us. She had stopped being strict after dad passed away and now she's a laid-back mother. She doesn't care what we do as long as we keep the house clean.

Mom left us alone and caught a taxi to the airport.

"Can we have a party?" Casey asked, joking around.

"Yeah right. Do you think I want to spend my free time cleaning a giant two story, mansion-like house? I know you don't." I said laughing.

I walked upstairs to my room with some snacks and started to get comfortable. I had a crap load of homework to do and needed to get all of it done by tomorrow.

I checked my phone, noticing a text from a new number. I knew it had to be Liam.

Liam: Hey. It's Liam.

Me: Hey.

Liam: Wrud?

Me: Nm, u?

We had a constant conversation going on until we both fell asleep. Today had been one of the best days of my life.
